Warsaw, Wawasee Swim Teams Split
SYRACUSE — Warsaw’s and Wawasee’s swim teams split a dual meet at Wawasee Saturday. The Warriors edged out Warsaw, 96-90, and the Lady Tigers topped their hosts by a more distant, 116-68 margin in the girls meet.
Jared Krugman won both the 200 and 500 freestyle swims (1:50.41 and 5:02.18), Karlson Hand won the Individual Medley (2:10.65) and set personal bests in both that race and the backstroke, Daegan Kingery won the 100 free (52.56) — where he set a lifetime best, as he did in the 50 free — and Brady Claassen won the diving competition (212.3) for Wawasee’s boys. Bryce Knepp, Kingery, Hand and Krugman combined to win the 400 free relay (3:36.26). Also, the Warriors (1-0, 1-0 NLC) went one-two in the 200 free, the 100 free and the dive competition on the way to the win.
Warsaw’s boys earned wins in six events. Grant Knight claimed top honors in the 50 free (22.74) and the breaststroke (1:00.78) as part of a four-win day, Alex Cook won the butterfly (59.62) on the way to three wins of his own, and Zach LaLonde touched first in the backstroke (1:00.56). LaLonde, Knight, Nathan Taylor and Cook teamed up for a first-place finish in the medley relay (1:43.46), and Knight, Nick Bazzoni, Gabe Bowers and Cook won the 200 free relay (1:35.65). The Tigers (0-1, 0-1 NLC) collected one-two finishes in the 50 free and the breaststroke in the narrow loss.
Meanwhile, in the girls race, the Lady Tigers (1-0, 1-0 NLC) claimed first in seven different events and went one-two in five different events, including a one-two finish in the medley relay and a one-two-three finish in the butterfly. Olivia Herman was tops in the 50 free (26.22), Grayson Kilburn won the diving competition (147.45), Taylor Gunter was first in the fly (1:09.17), and Delaney Wihebrink (56.08) was first in both the 100 free (56.08) and the breaststroke (1:08.22). Herman, Gracie Scholl, Gunter and Wihebrink combined to win the 200 free relay (1:48.80), and Leah Reinholt, Wihebrink, Gunter and Herman were first in the medley relay (2:00.07).
Ella Park and Lily Tyler collected two wins apiece for the Lady Warriors (0-2, 0-1 NLC). Park won the 200 free (2:07.16) and the 500 free (5:37.44), and Tyler was first in both the Individual Medley (2:27.38) and backstroke (1:08.19), while Wawasee’s 400 free relay team of Alexandra Haberman, Park, Tyler and Rileigh Atwood were tops in their event (4:06.4).
Wawasee hosts Elkhart Memorial next Tuesday. Warsaw hosts NorthWood on Thursday.
