TRITON 60, OREGON-DAVIS 37
The Trojans knocked down 8 of 20 3-pointers on their way to an emphatic season-opening win over host and sectional rival Oregon-Davis Wednesday.
Freshman Ashton Oviedo led Triton (1-0) with 15 points and eight rebounds and passed out a pair of assists to boot. Jared Bules scored 11 as the only other Triton player in double digits, but the Trojans got points from a full 10 of their players, including 17 off the bench in the win. That ball-sharing also led to 15 assists — including a game-high four by Quentin Amsden — on 23 made shots.
Oregon-Davis (0-1) was led by Dylan Murphy’s 11 points and Garrett Weil’s nine points and eight rebounds. The Bobcats fell behind 21-9 in the first quarter, and a 16-2 third quarter finished the hosts off.
Triton’s JV also won, 40-21. John Gardner put up 10 points, and Tyson Yates and Keegan Westager each scored seven in that win.
The Trojans will return to action at Plymouth next Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.
NORTHWOOD 53, LAKELAND 49
NorthWood’s boys basketball team held off host Lakeland for a season-opening win Wednesday.
The Panthers (1-0) led by as much as nine at 35-24 in the third quarter but only narrowly held on for the win in a game that saw four lead changes and four ties. NorthWood converted 13 of 19 (68.4 percent) shots from the floor in the second half, but the Lakers (0-1) were nearly as efficient at 9 of 18 (50 percent) over the final two frames.
Ben Vincent scored 17 to lead three Panthers in double figures, while Trent Edwards notched 12 points with five assists, and Matt Dutkowski scored 10 for the visitors. Lakeland got most of its offense from sophomore Brayden Bontrager, meanwhile, as he knocked down 6 of 13 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 26 points.
The Panthers play next at the Muncie Burris Tournament on Saturday, when they open with Heritage Christian at noon.
