Shirley Kate Kreider
Shirley Kate Kreider, 82, formerly of rural South Whitley, passed away peacefully at her home in Columbia City at 4:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2018.
She was born Sept. 5, 1936, in Fulton County, a daughter of the late Thomas M. and Juanita E. (Campbell) Newell. Her formative years were spent in Fulton County. Her family then moved to South Whitley where she attended South Whitley High School.
On Feb. 2, 1955, she was united in marriage to Franklin “Gene” Kreider. They made their home in rural South Whitley. In 2004, they moved to their new home in Columbia City. Mr. Kreider died March 1, 2016.
She was a full-time homemaker, raising the couple’s children.
She was a member of Harvest Community Church, Pierceton. She enjoyed gardening and putting together jigsaw puzzles. She is fondly remembered as a good cook and for her singing of Ole Christmas Tree at Christmas time.
She is survived by three children, Sharity A. Coble, South Whitley, Nicholas (Beth) Kreider, New Haven and Jill (Richard) Burton, Columbia City; ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nellie Thomson, Columbus.
The funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley. Burial is in the South Whitley Cemetery. Visitation is 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and 1 hour prior to the service.
