GRACE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 110, GREAT LAKES CHRISTIAN 50
Grace’s women’s basketball enjoyed a historic offensive night, beating Great Lakes Christian 110-50 on Friday night.
The Lady Lancers (4-4) scored the second-most points in program history, missing the team record by just one point.
Friday’s game was part of a two-day home tournament called the Carol Forbes Classic. The tournament, which coincides with the men’s tournament, helps raise funds for local cancer care in Kosciusko County.
Grace drilled a season-high 15 triples on the night, and all 13 healthy players registered a point in the scoring column.
Grace pressed the Crusaders from the opening tip, and the tactic immediately paid off. GLCC committed nine turnovers in the first quarter, leading to 12 points off those miscues for Grace.
The Lady Lancers led by eight at the quarter’s end. Brooke Sugg ripped off seven points in the period, and Lauren Godfrey buried a pair of 3-pointers.
Sugg and Brielle Wilson opened the second quarter with back-to-back triples, and Grace’s lead quickly exploded. An 11-0 run early in the period put Grace on top 37-17 after consecutive baskets from Kaylie Warble.
Sugg made a splash at the end of the half, hitting a 3-pointer with 1:04 left and then beating the buzzer with a putback hoop. Her last-second shot gave Grace a 51-24 lead at halftime.
Grace began to wear down the Crusaders in the second half. GLCC surrendered 33 points in the third quarter alone, despite Grace substituting liberally after halftime.
Olivia Pearson buried a 3-pointer with a minute left in the third quarter, which gave the Lady Lancers a 50-point lead at 84-34.
Grace’s starters did not play the fourth quarter; nearly every Lady Lancer saw 10 minutes of action in the contest.
Sugg tied for scoring honors with 20 points, adding five assists and a career-high eight steals.
Pearson had a season-best 14 points and five boards, drilling 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Warble finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, Godfrey added 11 points with a trio of treys, and Stull added eight points and three assists.
Melissa Goss registered seven points in 11 minutes, Pam Miller added 6 points, 5 boards and 4 assists, and Wilson had 8 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds.
For the game, Grace had 31 assists on 43 made field goals. The Lady Lancers also had 22 steals and scored 48 points off turnovers.
The Lady Lancers end the Carol Forbes Classic on Saturday, hosting Silver Lake at 2 p.m.
GRACE MEN’S BASKETBALL 107, SILVER LAKE 61
Grace’s men’s basketball team opened up the Terry Polston Hoops for Hope with a dominant 107-61 victory over Silver Lake on Friday.
All 14 healthy Lancers scored a point with five players reaching double digits. As a team, the Lancers shot 56 percent from the floor and had 25 assists on 39 made field goals.
The Lancers improved to 7-0 on the season and will look to make it eight straight on Saturday. Grace wraps up the home tournament at 4 p.m. against Emmaus.
In the first half, Grace was deadly with its shooting touch. Grace shot a blistering 73 percent from beyond the arc, making 8-of-11 on 3s.
Before five minutes had expired, Grace had already buried six triples. Charlie Warner, Jaret Sons and Haden Deaton each hit a pair of 3-pointers, giving the Lancers a comfortable 19-5 lead.
The Lancers maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the half. Grace’s cushion quickly expanded with a 22-2 charge late in the opening half.
Tim Swanson hit a pair of 3-pointers to spark Grace’s run, and Cody Holmes, Martin Schiele and Noel Mpie each scored four during that spurt.
Grace had a commanding 56-25 lead at halftime. The team shot 69 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the foul line.
The Lancers never led by fewer than 29 for the remainder of the contest, substituting freely after halftime.
Mpie registered his first collegiate double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Sons tallied 18 points by shooting 6-of-7 overall, and Deaton shot 7-of-10 for 16 points and six assists.
Warner hit four 3-pointers for 12 points, Swanson had 11 points with a trio of triples, and Braxton Linville handed out eight assists.
Holmes did not miss a shot, scoring eight points on 4-of-4 shooting, Schiele scored eight points in 12 minutes, and Joseph Smith chipped in six points and nine boards.
PLYMOUTH 50, TRITON 21
Triton is starting to figure things out with its young roster, but not much worked in the lopsided home loss to Plymouth.
Plymouth (4-1) ran out to a 13-1 lead in the first quarter, then took a 16-point lead into the break in full command.
Whytnie Miller led the Trojans with eight points and Delaine Groves had six points.
The JV game was also won by Plymouth in a 37-17 final. Abbey Viers had six points for Triton.
Triton (0-5) will turn right around Saturday and host Wawasee.
