Blackford High School School Put On Lockdown After Student Brings Gun
HARTFORD CITY — Blackford High School went on lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a student brought a gun into the building. That’s according to a message sent to Blackford County Schools parents that was also posted on Facebook.
The post explained school personnel was alerted to the armed student at 2:10 p.m. The school responded immediately by going on lockdown.
Law enforcement was also notified, and the building’s threat protocols and safety plans were put into action.
Blackford County Sheriff’s deputies had the student in custody by 2:16 p.m. and found the gun the teen was armed with.
No students or staff were hurt in the incident.
Students remained on lockdown for an extended amount of time after the student was apprehended as an additional precaution.
According to school and police officials, every student, every backpack, and every classroom was searched to ensure student safety.
As a result, the school’s dismissal was delayed.
While that incident was being handled, another student in the building suffered an injury in the industrial technology lab. An ambulance took that student to a hospital, resulting in rumors of a student injury related to the gun threat.
Officials reassured parents that the two situations were unrelated and nobody was hurt in connection to the armed student.
School administrators thanked students, teachers, administrators, the Hartford City Police Department, and the Blackford County Sheriff’s Department for their quick action and resolution of the situation.
School resumed at normal time Wednesday morning. The school also made counselors and additional personnel available to students if needed.
