TIPPECANOE VALLEY 34, PERU 7
It’s hard to say the opening round of a sectional could be a trap game, but Valley’s game at Peru Friday night in Class 3-A Sectional 27 was a dangerous one.
After dropping the Three Rivers Conference championship in heartbreaking fashion last week at Southwood, visiting winless Peru could have presented problems of focus. That didn’t happen for the Vikings.
A scoreless first quarter had Valley respond in the second with a pair of touchdowns, and then add two more in the third quarter to pull away from the Tigers.
At the helm for the Vikings was Cam Parker, who did a lion’s share of the work. Parker carried the ball 26 times for 201 yards and four touchdowns, scoring on plays of two, seven, 11 and five yards. Dakota Gaff also added a 22-yard touchdown for the Vikings, which piled up 354 yards in total.
Peru’s Kade Townsend had its lone score on an 86-yard kickoff return for a score in the third quarter.
Valley improves to 6-4 overall and will host Maconaquah (8-2) next week. The Braves dumped John Glenn 48-13. The other half of the sectional grid had Knox upset Jimtown 21-14 and Mishawaka Marian defeat Fairfield 42-7.
TRITON 34, CULVER 12
Triton advanced to the semifinals of Sectional 41 with a 34-12 victory on the road at Culver Community Friday night.
James Snyder threw for 147 yards and three touchdowns on 7-14-1 passing. Culver Community out-gained Triton 224-128 in rushing yards but recorded zero completions in three pass attempts. Delano Shumpert caught three of Snyder’s passes for 96 receiving yards and two touchdowns and ran a pick from Donovan Ziaja back 76 yards to push Triton out to a 21-6 lead at halftime. Ethan Berry ran for 64 yards and a touchdown in nine carries. Keegan Westafer hauled in a 12-yard pass for a score in the fourth quarter, pushing the Trojans out to a 27-6 cushion as they backed up a 35-21 defeat of the Cavaliers in Week 5.
Zac Ditmire ran for 113 yards and both of Culver’s touchdowns to lead the Cavs (2-7).
Snyder finished with six solo tackles and 11 assists, while Trenton Kreft recorded six solo tackles and four assists to lead the Triton defense.
The Trojans (7-3) advance to play Winamac (5-5) on the road next week after the Warriors’ 38-16 win over Caston Friday. North Judson (5-5) and South Central (3-7) play on the other side of the sectional bracket.
