Art In Action: Current Exhibits Open For Visitors
By Darla McCammon
Two artists share the limelight at Lakeland Art Association this month along with a special program at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, by Ann Shive from Crestwoods Frame Shop and Gallery.
The first artist is John Wade III, an interesting folk artist who is self-taught, having studied art as he progressed through the public school system. His natural aptitude has been recognized in scholastic art competitions and evidenced by the successful number of one-person exhibits in Indiana and Ohio with an impressive invitation to exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art. He has been influenced by abstract, post-modernism styles he has studied of African-American and European artists. His work has become notably collectible and has developed into a signature style that is recognized and appreciated by those who collect it.
The second artist is diametrically different from John Wade. Kenton Yoder is exhibiting abstract paintings in acrylic and mixed media selections. Also different is the lack of art school or training until age 56. Prior to that, Yoder worked in industries where creativity was encouraged and had hobbies that lent themselves to a creative side, so he was not without experience. He began a regimen that led him further into the creative efforts he brings. Like many artists without formal training, he eagerly creates from his own instincts to produce work that elicits an emotional response from critics and collectors alike.
Preparations for the LAA fall member competition are underway. Entries will be accepted from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28. You must be a member, but membership can be purchased with your entry for a small fee. A reception announcing winners will be held between 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11. You can pick up a prospectus when you drop in to the gallery to see the work of Wade and Yoder. LAA is open from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
The Darlene Romano photographic exhibit is now available for viewing at Warsaw City Hall Art Gallery on the main floor. New pieces will be interchanged during this exhibit. One piece was delivered to the Honeywell Clark Gallery where it was accepted into their famous and largest juried photograph competition show. Titled “Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge,” this large sepia-toned landscape will take your breath away.
City Hall Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday except holidays. Due to the proximity to the LAA gallery, an enjoyable time can be had by visiting both galleries and then taking advantage of the many fantastic eateries in downtown Warsaw.
City Hall is located at 102 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw. LAA is located at 302 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw.
