CMA Wins 5th Straight Regional Title
CULVER — Culver Military Academy won its fifth straight regional title with a 4-1 win over Peru at home at the Gable Tennis Complex Wednesday night.
Nikolas Warnholtz defeated Ethan Hyde 6-2, 6-2 at 1 singles, Henry Bilicic downed Ryan Smith 6-1, 6-3 at 2 singles, Jordan Craig and Peter Gallagher eliminated Christopher Dicken and Greysen Spohn 6-2, 6-2 at 1 doubs, and Vincent Huang and Paul Wilson topped Lief Astrup and Bryce Cochran 6-2, 6-1 at 2 doubles. Peru’s only win came at 3 singles, where Brad Ryan beat Christopher Bower 7-6, 6-0.
Also at the Academies Wednesday, Maconaquah’s Cole Borden defeated Tippecanoe Valley’s Payton Mills 6-0, 6-0 to win the singles sectional championship. Mills advanced to Culver with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Whitko’s Devon Akers in the opening round of the Warsaw Sectional last Wednesday.
In the doubles tournament at Culver, Triton’s Chase Butler and Carter Kuntz will play Warsaw’s Spencer Britton and Nolan Knight on Saturday. Britton and Knight advanced with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dicken and Spohn as their team’s only match point in Tuesday’s regional semifinal. Butler and Kuntz were the Trojans’ only point in their Bremen Sectional semifinal loss to the host Lions last week via a three-set, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Brett Yelaska and Cale Brown. Saturday’s doubles championship is set for noon.
Elsewhere in the tennis world, Grace College’s womens tennis team was unable to pull off an upset of Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday, losing 5-1 in the semifinals of the Crossroads League Tournament.
Grace gave the Wildcats (15-0, 9-0 CL) fits in doubles. Emily Mast and Jenna Jackson produced an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
Jayna Armstrong and Morgan Mast battled to an 8-5 defeat at No. 3 doubles, and Molly Fitzpatrick and Carrie Copeland lost 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
The Wildcats quickly won three singles’ matches to pick up five points, ending the semifinal match.
The Lady Lancers (13-4) have one final match remaining in the fall season. Grace will host IU East on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
