CULVER ACADEMIES REGIONAL
Warsaw’s boys tennis team bowed out of the state tournament with a 3-2 loss to Peru in a Tigers versus Tigers match-up at the Culver Academies Regional Tuesday, while the host Eagles eliminated Plymouth 5-0 on the other courts at the Gable Tennis Complex.
Spencer Britton and Nolan Knight stayed alive in the doubles tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Peru’s Chris Dicken and Greysen Spohn, and Jarrett Orr and Michael Anderson combined for a 6-2, 7-5 win over Gabe Baker and Bryce Cochran on the other doubles court in the Tigers’ two wins Tuesday.
Caleb Williams fell 6-2, 6-0 to Ethan Hyde at 1 singles, Reuben Williams lost 6-2, 6-1 versus Ryan Smith at 2 singles, and Brian Elliott lost 7-6(2), 6-0 to Brad Ryan at 3 singles.
Triton’s Chase Butler and Carter Kuntz advanced in the doubles tournament with a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over Rochester’s Andrew Dunwoody and Matthew Meiser and will play Britton and Knight Saturday.
Maconaquah’s Cole Borden defeated Wabash’s Rob Ford, 6-2, 6-1 in the state singles tournament in Culver, meanwhile, and will play Tippecanoe Valley’s Payton Mills Wednesday evening.
In the Culver-Plymouth team semifinal, Nikolas Warnholtz topped Mitch Rose 6-4, 6-4 at 1 singles, Henry Bilicic defeated Grant Houin 6-3, 6-1 at 2 singles, and Christopher Bower downed Nic Bagley 7-5, 6-1 at 3 singles. Jordan Craig and Peter Gallagher trumped Clay Hilliard and Adam Hunter 6-4, 6-4 at 1 doubles, and Vincent Huang and Paul Wilson beat Drew Harrell and Andy Rostron 7-5, 6-1 at 2 doubles.
Culver Military Academy and Peru will play for the championship Wednesday beginning at 4:30 p.m. The Eagles are playing for a fifth straight regional title, while Peru is playing for its first regional title since 1995.
CROSSROADS LEAGUE QUARTERS
Grace’s women’s tennis team defeated Taylor 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament on Tuesday.
The Lady Lancers (13-3) will play at top-seed Indiana Wesleyan in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday. Grace reached the semifinals for the second time in three years.
Grace also increased its program record for wins in a single season with its 13th victory.
The Lady Lancers earned an early advantage by winning two of the three doubles’ points with all three being highly competitive.
Emily Mast and Jenna Jackson won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, and Morgan Mast and Jayna Armstrong battled to a 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
Carrie Copeland and Molly Fitzpatrick also nearly made a massive comeback at No. 2 doubles. After falling behind 6-1, the duo almost forced a tiebreaker before losing 6-8.
The Mast sisters both won in singles. Morgan cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, and Emily pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Fitzpatrick also won in three sets at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Armstrong coasted to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.
