Boys Soccer Results: Sept. 27
LAKELAND CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 5, ROCHESTER 1
LCA went out with a bang in its regular season finale at First Source Field on the campus of Grace College.
Parker Stewart scored four goals and Landon Twombly headed in the other as the Cougars rolled past Rochester.
Stewart netted three of his goals within six minutes of each other on both sides of the halftime horn. Stewart did the work solo in the 34th and 35th minutes, then converted a penalty just a minute into the second half. His fourth of the day came with four minutes left, assisted by Twombly. The two were in on the other in the 75th minute, when Stewart sailed a pass into Twombly, who buried the header for his tally.
Wade Shafer had the lone Zebra celebration, a penalty conversion in the 55th minute.
Rochester actually outshot the Academy 16-13, but Remington Swanson was a rock in net for the Cougars with 15 saves. Dalton Heishman made eight stops for the visitors.
The game was played at Grace as part of a Pink Out Night put on by Lakeland Christian Academy in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund.
“We showed a lot of resilience tonight, it was senior night and the seniors all contributed to this win,” said LCA head coach Dan Miller. “The defense of Mark McQuade and Landon Twombly was incredible, midfielder Micah Mansfield played a vital part in helping us keep possession throughout the game. Theran McKeever and Jake Harmon were key in allowing us to score so many goals tonight. However, junior Parker Stewart was not going to allow our seniors to lose their last home game. He played at another level tonight.”
LCA wraps up its regular season at 10-4-1 and will prepare for its first round matchup at the Argos Sectional against the host Dragons.
WARSAW 1, NORTHRIDGE 1
The match lost a lot of its luster earlier in the week, but it was still a chance for Warsaw to prove a point.
Northridge wrapped up the Northern Lakes Conference title Tuesday with its win over Wawasee, but both clubs came into Thursday’s contest undefeated in the powerful conference. The adjective will remain in the history books as Ethan Grill’s goal for the Tigers and Northridge’s equalizer late in the second half kept both teams off the ‘L’.
No. 12 Warsaw finishes NLC play 4-0-3 overall while No. 5 Northridge will end 6-0-1 and champions.
Warsaw’s JV would cap its season unbeaten after a 4-0 win over the Raiders. Dayne Koontz, Brandon Lopez, Judah Simfukwe and Adrian Tanase all scored for the Tigers. Tanase, Brennan Cox and Daniel Warner all recorded assists. Warsaw finishes the JV season 13-0-2, allowing just three goals all season, posting 11 shutout wins and scoring 52 goals in total.
Warsaw (9-2-6) will head into the Homestead Sectional, set to play Fort Wayne Wayne Monday in the opening match.
WAWASEE 3, PLYMOUTH 1
Wawasee pulled off a conference shocker to end the regular season, upsetting the Rockies in Plymouth.
Chris Pena had a goal and an assist for the Warriors, scoring in the third minute and setting up a Brandon Tayagua strike two minutes before the half. Cam Gillum assisted on the Pena goal.
Ethan Carey tucked away Wawasee’s first NLC win in the 78th minute on a penalty conversion.
Dillon Drake made 13 big saves to get the victory in net.
“Felt so good to watch the boys play with fire and passion tonight,” said Wawasee head coach Jordan Sharp. “The boys played big and gives us great momentum going into postseason play. All of our guys showed up to play tonight. Very proud, and thankful, to bring home a conference win.”
Garrett Stuckman scored a goal, but Wawasee lost its final JV game 3-1 to Plymouth.
Wawasee (5-11, 1-6 NLC) will head into the postseason with its first match Wednesday against Angola at the Angola Sectional.
NORTHWOOD 5, BETHANY CHRISTIAN 4
In a shootout, Sebastian Guillen was the hero for the Panthers.
Guillen recorded a hat trick to lift the Panthers over No. 13 Bethany. Andre DeFreitas and Lukas Aukerman each scored for the Panthers, which had Landon Parker assist on three goals and Jerson Sanchez another. Luke Lingle made eight saves for the keeper victory.
The match was the final contest to be played at Nappanee Elementary School.
NorthWood (7-7-2) will head to the postseason with a date against West Noble Monday in the first round of the Angola Sectional.
LAVILLE 3, TIPPECANOE VALLEY 0
Valley couldn’t find its offense in a shutout loss to LaVille.
Coming out of a scoreless first half, LaVille quickly got on the board in the second half and carried the momentum to its fifth win of the season, its fourth in the past five matches.
Valley closes the regular season at 2-12 overall and will look to win its first-ever sectional game when it takes on Maconaquah Monday at the Maconaquah Sectional.
