Every City Needs A Baby Box
I recently read a newspaper article which noted that for the second time in five months, a newborn had been rescued from a Safe Haven baby box in at the Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department in Michigan City.
The padded climate-controlled boxes allow mothers to safely surrender their newborns without having to look someone in the eye. When the baby box door is opened, it triggers a silent alarm, and sends out a 911 call. Once the door is shut again, the baby box is locked until firefighters and paramedics arrive on the scene.
I support the Protection at Conception bill that would dismantle abortion using the Supreme Court’s own language coupled with Indiana’s own code. I also believe that ultimately we will abolish the abomination of abortion in Indiana.
Consequently, I support the Safe Haven Baby Box program to offer one more option to women facing unplanned pregnancies. I believe that keeping the baby is always the first and best choice, but when that cannot happen for whatever reason, the baby boxes are a wonderful alternative.
There are currently three locations in Indiana where you can safely surrender your newborn under the Safe Haven law. That’s a good start, but every city needs a baby box so that some of the 8,000 Hoosier babies lost to abortion can be given another chance at life.
If you need help finding a safe haven location or to speak to a licensed counselor call their National Safe Haven hotline at 1-866-99BABY1.
