Nelson Eugene Kistler
Nelson Eugene Kistler, 81, Syracuse, passed away Friday, September 21, 2018, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Syracuse. Nelson Kistler was born June 28, 1937, in Syracuse to Russell and Mary (Droke) Kistler. He married Mary Jean Smoker on May 1, 1999; she preceded him in death on Sept. 23, 2013.
After graduating from High School, he served in the United States Navy aboard the Spinax Submarine. Mr. Kistler was proud to have served his country and was a member of the Syracuse American Legion Post 223.
He was a production manager in the mobile home manufacturing industry prior to his retirement. He enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Fort Myers, Fla., golfing, watching I.U. basketball and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by four children: Danae Whetten, Fort Myers, Fla.; Denise (Dan) Brennan, Syracuse; Chad (Shelia) Berkeypile, Milford; and Brent (Erin) Berkeypile, Syracuse. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one brother George Kistler, Auburn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Jean, two brothers, Claude and Stanley and two sisters, Katherine and Martha.
Friends and family will gather for a celebration of Nelson Kistler’s life at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27, at Maple Grove Church of the Brethren, 20430 County Road 46, New Paris; Pastor Dwayne Runkle will officiate the service. Military honors will be provided by the United States Navy and the American Legion Post 223. There will be a time of sharing one hour prior to the service, from 5-6 p.m.
Memorial contributions in Nelsons honor may be directed to Maple Grove Church of the Brethren or the American Legion Post 223.
