Volleyball Results: Sept. 22
NORTHWOOD 4-0 AT BREMEN INVITE
NorthWood once again stood tallest at Saturday’s Bremen Invite, winning its third consecutive title.
The Panthers beat both Wawasee and John Glenn by 2-0 counts and went three with Culver Academy to escape pool play. In the championship against Prairie Heights, NorthWood won in two, 25-17, 25-17.
NorthWood’s usual suspects were again spectacular, with Maddy Payne smashing 29 kills, Kate Rulli making 10 blocks, Whitney Gessinger digging 47 attempts and Caroline Mullett adding 23 digs and 87 assists.
Wawasee lost in three to Culver Academy and beat Glenn in two among its three games. Stat leaders for the Lady Warriors included Hannah Gaerte and Molly Jones with nine kills each, Jones with three blocks, Elizabeth Kleopfer with 29 assists and Brooke Heche with 25 digs.
Triton also played on the opposite draw, but went 0-3, losing all three in two games to Bremen, Prairie Heights and South Bend Adams. Individual stats for the Lady Trojans were not provided.
NorthWood (22-6) will host Jimtown Monday, Wawasee (12-11) will host Northridge Monday, and Triton (4-16) will host Pioneer Tuesday.
WARSAW 3-1 AT WARSAW INVITE
Warsaw reached the final of its home invite, but couldn’t find some magic in losing to Dwenger in the championship.
Warsaw won 2-0 against Jimtown, Fort Wayne Snider and Rochester in pool play, advancing to the championship against Class 3-A No. 3 Fort Wayne Dwenger. The Saints proved too tough in the final in a 25-18, 25-12 title clincher.
Betty Barnett led the Lady Tiger offense with 29 kills for the tourney, with Kacy Bragg adding 79 assists and Kylie Smith 33 digs. Bragg, Barnett and Katie Swanson were all named All-Tourney Team for Warsaw.
Tippecanoe Valley played in the other pool, losing to Angola and LaPorte in two and Northfield in three before beating Jimtown in two to close out its day. Stats for the Vikings were not provided.
Warsaw (20-7) will host NorthWood Thursday while Tippecanoe Valley (13-11) will meet Oak Hill Monday.
INDIANA WESLEYAN 3, GRACE 0
Grace’s volleyball team was unable to end its drought against Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday in a 3-0 defeat.
The Lady Lancers (12-5, 6-3 Crossroads League) could not find their rhythm on offense; the defense by the Wildcats (7-10, 6-3 CL) held Grace to a .063 hitting percentage. No player for Grace was able to reach double-digit kills.
As a team IWU had 47 kills on a .220 percentage, and Grace was stifled into 25 kills.
In the opening set IWU quickly opened up a 10-5 lead, and Grace never rallied. The Lady Lancers had seven kills and seven errors in the set, losing 25-14.
The Wildcats blew open the second set midway through with a 12-3 run, and Grace lost 25-18.
Grace started to build momentum in the third set after claiming an early 12-7 lead. Kelsee Zuidema had back-to-back aces, and Teel aced another to spark Grace.
The Lady Lancers still led 15-10, but IWU responded with a pair of 5-0 runs to stun the hosts.
Teel did her best to keep Grace’s hopes alive with a kill and a block on consecutive points, but the Wildcats pulled away 25-20 to end the match.
Alexa Hill had a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs, Teel added 5 kills, 10 digs and 3 block assists, and Gina Novotny recorded a team-high 15 digs.
The Lady Lancers continue league play on Wednesday at Spring Arbor.
WAWASEE 9TH GRADE 4-0 AT CENTRAL NOBLE TOURNEY
Wawasee upped its freshman record to 16-5 on the season with four wins at the Central Noble Freshman Tourney.
Wawasee dumped Fremont, Northridge and Winamac in two games, then blasted Columbia City 25-24, 25-9 to win the tournament. It’s Wawasee’s second tourney title, adding to it’s home tourney win.
Laney Gross had a huge tourney for the Lady Warriors, posting 44 assists, 17 kills, 15 aces and 13 digs. Teammates Amber Beer had 21 kills and 16 digs, Dylan Konieczny had 24 kills and 16 digs, Gloria Slabaugh had 47 digs and Talia Kuhl had 43 digs.
LAKEVIEW 8TH GRADE 8TH AT DUNES TOURNEY
Lakeview had a tough go at Saturday’s Dunes Tourney. Lakeview started out by beating Krueger in two, but lost to John Young in three, Wabash in three and Northridge in three.
Caitlyn Patrick led the team with 25 kills and added 13 assists, eight aces and two blocks. Tessa Graney had 25 assists, 10 aces and eight kills, Lauren Eastwood added 13 kills, Kinsey Atkins had 11 aces and seven digs and Madison Desenberg had eight kills.
LAKEVIEW 7TH GRADE 3RD AT DUNES TOURNEY
Lakeview’s seventh grade team rebounded from a loss in the final pool matchup to rally for third at the Dunes Tourney. Lakeview beat North Judson and Northridge in two, but lost to New Prairie in three. In its final contest, the Tigers beat Wabash in three.
Clara Porter had 14 assists and 11 aces, Kenzie Chivington had 11 aces and six assists, Olivia Devenney and Colette Blackburn combined for 11 aces, and Leah Henderson and Sadie Humbarger combined for 10 kills.
LAKELAND CHRISTIAN ACADEMY MIDDLE SCHOOL 1-1 AT PORTAGE CHRISTIAN INVITE
LCA’s middle school team went 1-1 to finish third in the Portage Christian Tourney. LCA beat Victory Christian 2-0, then lost to Portage Christian 2-1.
