Mary E. Pottenger
Mary E. Pottenger, 94, Rochester, passed away at 2:01 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, at Chase Center of Logansport.
In Grafton, W. Va. on July 17, 1924, she was born to Ellis and Gertrude Polling Lones. Growing up she shared her childhood with two brothers and two sisters. She was a proud graduate of Star City High School.
Mary and Paul E. Pottenger were married in Fulton on Nov. 29, 1970. They have shared 48 years of life’s adventures. They enjoyed life in on the farm Twelve Mile and on the sparkling waters of the shore Lake Manitou. For many years they wintered in Crescent City, Florida. She was a member of the ladies auxiliaries of Moose Family Center # 1107, V.F.W. # 1343 and the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post.
An entrepreneur, she was a hair stylist who owned and operated Mary’s Beauty-Go-Round. When the Pottengers moved to the farm in Twelve Mile, she relocated the shop there. Earlier in life she was a talented seamstress at Hart-Shaffner-Marx.
As a grandmother, she was proud to oversee four generations. Some of her grandchildren called her their “Glam-Gram.” They always took note of her meticulous hairstyle, impeccable cosmetics, accessories and trending attire.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Paul Pottenger; a daughter, Linda Westhusin, Groton, Conn.; a son, David Phillips and wife Cheryl, DeMotte; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents; a son, Robin Gates in May, 2008; two sisters: Betty McElheny and Hazel Strong; and two brothers: Robert Lones and Ernest Lones.
A celebration of the life of Mary E. Pottenger will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Friends may visit with the family an hour prior to her services. Interment will be in the Deedsville Cemetery.
