Tennis Results: Sept. 17
NORTHWOOD 5, WAWASEE 0
NorthWood’s boys tennis team finished up the Northern Lakes Conference round robin at 4-3 with a sweep of host Wawasee Monday.
The Panthers gave up a total of just seven games on the five varsity courts. The closest match of the evening came at 3 singles, where Landon Holland beat Colin Rhoades, 6-2, 6-1. Grant Topping and Dawson Bley put away Clayton Firestone and Zeke Keim, 6-1, 6-1 at 2 doubles in the only other match where the Warriors won multiple games.
Wes Troyer defeated Zach Leedy, 6-0, 6-1 at 1 singles, Ben Vincent downed Graham Perek, 6-1, 6-0 at 2 singles, and Trajan Schwartz and Jack Wysong shut out Jacob Krugman and Grant Brookes, 6-0, 6-0 at 1 doubles. NorthWood’s JV also won via sweep, 7-0.
NorthWood’s varsity improved to 10-4 overall. Wawasee drops to 6-10 overall and finishes the NLC round robin at 1-6. Both teams enter the NLC Tournament at Plymouth Wednesday evening. The tournament will concluded Saturday at Wawasee.
BREMEN 3, TRITON 2
Triton lost a pair of three-setters at 1 and 3 singles, and the Trojans fell 3-2 at sectional rival Bremen Monday.
John Gardner fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to Mark Bahr at 1 singles, and Connor Large lost 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to Dawson Hickman at 3 singles. Jared Bules fell in straight sets to Carson Miller, 7-6(1), 6-1 at 2 singles as the Lions swept all three singles matches.
The Trojans’ wins came on the doubles courts, where Carter Kuntz and Chase Butler combined to beat Shay Kyser and Taylor Richards, 6-2, 6-1 at 1 doubles, and Tyler Heckaman and Grant Eib downed Jack Barnes and Andy Aguayo, 6-1, 6-3 at 2 doubles.
Triton’s JV also came up short, 3-1.
The varsity Trojans dipped to 6-10. Triton plays Manchester Tuesday before jumping into the Hoosier North Athletic Conference at Knox Wednesday and Thursday.
GRACE 8, ADRIAN 1
Grace’s men’s tennis team continued its hot streak by beating Adrian 8-1 on Monday.
The Lancers (4-3) picked up their third consecutive victory and first road win of the season.
Grace won two of the three doubles’ points to seize early momentum. Max Rozas and Caleb Yoder won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, and Jacob Gray and Conner Bates eased away 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Bates did not lose a game at No. 6 singles, and Rozas (No. 1 singles) and Pavle Popovic (No. 2 singles) each won 6-1, 6-1.
Gray produced a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, Diego Zamora won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, and Yoder battled to a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5.
The Lancers resume Crossroads League play on Wednesday, hosting Indiana Wesleyan at 2 p.m.
CONCORD 5, WARSAW 0
Concord wrapped up a perfect round robin season in the Northern Lakes Conference with a shutout of Warsaw.
Singles play was dominated by Concord, sweeping both one and two singles matches by Alex Serwatka and Freddy Buckingham at love-love over Caleb Williams and Reuben Williams. Cal Whitaker finished off Brian Elliott four and two at No. 3.
Doubles were a little more competitive, where No. 2 Grant Lucchese and Drew McDougle defeated Jarett Orr and Michael Ray three and one, but the No. 1 court had Travis Herman and Nate Slabach go the distance with Spencer Britton and Nolan Knight in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 battle.
Concord finishes 7-0 to lead the group heading into this week’s Northern Lakes Conference Championships. Goshen is 6-1 and in good shape to position for a split of the title. Plymouth, Northridge and NorthWood are all at 4-3 overall and will need some help and big showings. Warsaw (2-5), Wawasee (1-6) and Elkhart Memorial (0-7) will look to sharpen up heading into the state tournament in a week.
JV NLC TOURNAMENT
NorthWood’s JV team tied for Concord at the junior varsity Northern Lakes Conference Tournament on Saturday.
The co-champs both finished with 21 points, Warsaw was third with 17 points, and Wawasee’s JV finished seventh with three points.
Skip McCoy and Treyton Martin were champions at 2 doubles for the Panthers. Chase Horner finished second at 1 singles, Brad Demitruk was second at 3 singles, and Bryce Harner and Zach Parisi finished as runners-up at 1 doubles, while Nate Clickovich wound up third at 2 singles.
