BAINBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, MICH. — One person was killed in a crash involving a Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Tribal Police vehicle in Berrien County.
The crash happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of M-140 and Territorial Road in Bainbridge Township, dispatch confirmed.
Two vehicles were involved in the collision, one of which was a Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Tribal Police Department car. The other was a Lincoln.
The police vehicle was responding to a domestic violence call in Silver Creek Township when the driver of the Lincoln failed to yield at a stop sign as she was headed west on Territorial Road, according to a release from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver of the Lincoln was pronounced dead at the scene. On Monday, she was identified as Sherry Lynn Temple, a 69-year-old from Stevensville.
The two officers in the police vehicle were taken to the hospital.
The driver has been identified as 45-year-old Gustavo Pop-Monroy. He suffered a cut to his left hand and a broken left forearm. He was treated and released from a local hospital.
The passenger, 35-year-old Earl Holbrook, was airlifted to a local hospital. He suffered a head injury along with a partially severed left ear and appears to have a broken bone behind his ear, police say. He will undergo surgery Monday afternoon to repair his ear. He is currently in stable condition.
Investigators have been able to confirm that the emergency lights and siren were activated on the patrol vehicle prior to the crash occurring, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office. They have also been able to determine that the Lincoln passenger vehicle failed to stop at the intersection.
The sheriff’s department reports that all three people were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
