Doris B. Snell
Doris B. Snell, 92, North Manchester, passed away at 7:55 a.m. on Sept. 10, 2018, at Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester. Daughter of Albert F. and Mary A. (Hollinger) Bowers, she was born on April 28, 1926, in Reading, Penn. and was the youngest of three children.
In 1944 she graduated from Wilson High School in West Lawn, Penn. She met E. DeWayne Snell on a blind date while he was stationed at Indiantown Gap, Penn. They were married on July 14, 1945. The two were married for 67 years before he passed away on April 13, 2013.
When the Snell’s moved back to DeWayne’s home town of North Manchester, she took a job as a secretary and payroll clerk at Heckman’s Bindery in North Manchester. Later she worked for Farm Bureau Insurance in Wabash and then worked as a receptionist and billing department for Dr. George Balsbaugh in North Manchester. After working there for several years, she began working for Manchester High School as an audio/visual coordinator in 1966 and later retiring in 1989. During her time at Manchester High School, she attended St. Francis University for a few years.
Doris Snell and her family enjoyed traveling throughout the world. Her personal favorite place to visit and vacation were to the western U.S., Europe and Florida. When she wasn’t traveling with her family or working, she enjoyed sewing, reading, Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and entertaining family in friends in her home.
A member of Manchester Church of the Brethren, she was a spiritually strong individual that faithfully attended every Sunday with her husband and family. Doris was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter D.K., North Manchester and the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority also of North Manchester.
The loving memory of Doris B. Snell will be remember by her daughter, Marsha (Michael) Flora, Fort Wayne; four grandchildren: Darcy (David Neiman) Flora, Dillon, Colo.; Megan (James) Chappo, Prosper, Texas; Christine Gonzalez and Rachel Gonzalez both of Naperville, Ill.; one son-in-law, Robert Gonzalez, Naperville, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert F. and Mary A. Bowers; husband, E. DeWayne Snell; one daughter, Tamara Gonzalez who passed away in 2010; one brother and one sister.
Family and friends may call from 12:30-2:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14, at Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East Street, North Manchester. Funeral services will begin at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 14, at Timbercrest Chapel. A short P.E.O. service will begin at 12:15 p.m. with calling following. Burial will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery, 600 Beckley Street, North Manchester. Pastor Karen Eberly will officiate.
