Boys Soccer Results: Sept. 12
ROCHESTER 6, VALLEY 1
A goal just four minutes into the match opened a flood gate for Rochester.
Will Thonn again went on a scoring spree, notching the first goal en route to a hat trick as the Zebras rolled. Thonn’s 21st goal of the season in the 78th minute leaves him one short of 50 for his career.
Kaleb Haimes scored two first half goals and Skylar Razer had the other for the Zebras.
Joel Cisneros scored Valley’s lone goal in the second half.
The Vikings (0-9) will host Peru in another TRC battle Thursday.
WAWASEE 3, COLUMBIA CITY 2
The win for Wawasee had double meaning Wednesday afternoon.
Wawasee saluted its seniors with a victory, but also halted a rough seven-game losing streak in the process.
Chris Pena recorded the hat trick to lead the Warriors to victory. Pena broke into the scoring column in the 10th minute, assisted by Juan Hurtado. A minute before half, the speedy junior struck again, again helped by Hurtado. His final goal was the golden goal, scored in the 75th minute to break the 2-2 deadlock.
City scored its two goals in the 27th and 54th minutes.
Senior Dillon Drake got the win in net, making nine saves.
“Great to see the boys play tough today and get the win on senior night,” said Wawasee head coach Jordan Sharp. “It was a needed win against a talented Columbia City side. Was great to see Pena get his hat trick and also to get all the seniors on the field.”
Columbia City’s JV beat Wawasee 2-1.
Wawasee (3-7) will get back at it Saturday in a home date with East Noble.
GRACE MEN 3, HOLY CROSS 0
Playing its first match as an NAIA ranked team in decades, Grace’s men’s soccer team defeated Holy Cross 3-0 on Wednesday.
The Lancers (5-1-1) won their fourth straight game, recording their fourth shutout of the season in the process.
No. 24 Grace used goals from Cody Boerema, Togo Narusawa and Ulisses Miranda in the rout of the Saints (1-5).
The Lancers wasted little time jumping ahead of the Saints. Before 15 minutes had expired, Grace had netted twice.
In the 12th minute, Breno Oliveira set up Narusawa for the game’s first goal. The Lancers continued to apply pressure and kept the Saints on their defensive half of the field.
At the 14:58 mark, Grace’s lead doubled. Boerema assisted Miranda to put the Lancers on top 2-0.
The Saints could only muster two shots offensively in the first half; Grace went into halftime ahead by two. But Grace wasn’t done scoring yet.
The Lancers tried two shots early in the second and eventually scored again in the 69th minute. Narusawa added an assist to his earlier goal, finding Boerema for his second goal of the season.
The Saints struggled to put together much of a fight. Holy Cross mustered just one shot over the final 20 minutes after falling behind by three goals.
Kurt Hamlin picked up his fourth shutout of the season as goalkeeper. He made three saves in 90 minutes.
Miranda tallied three shots to lead all players, and Marcelo Talamas, Boerema, Colin Cape and Tyler Brueckman each shot twice.
The Lancers will end the week with a major test. Grace will play at No. 12 Cardinal Stritch on Saturday in an NAIA Top 25 showdown.
