Family Safety Day Educates Many Despite Rain
WARSAW — Rain showers and cool temperatures didn’t keep families from coming out to enjoy Family Safety Day today, Sept. 8. The event was held at Central Park.
While learning about safety doesn’t always sound like fun, local sponsors Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Lutheran Health Network KCH and Kosciusko REMC brought fun activities for all ages.
The day’s activities included a bicycle rodeo, boat and bucket truck rides, gummy worm surgery and fire extinguisher simulation. Firefighters, state police officers, county sheriff’s deputies, paramedics, DNR officers, dive team members, Sparky the Fire Dog and Daren the Lion were on scene to join in on the fun.
New this year, children were able to participate in a junior firefighter challenge. Children crawled through tunnels, climbed over ramps, carried a hose, drug a dummy and practiced spraying a target with water. All of these activities simulated the duties of a firefighter.
Children were encouraged to take part in the Safety Scavenger Hunt to make sure they didn’t miss anything.
The Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory demonstrated a dollhouse burn. The smoke and flame patterns helped the audience understand basic fire behavior, including flashover and the effects of horizontal and vertical ventilation.
Parkview Samaritan Helicopter was on-site in the event’s early hours with Lutheran Air landing in Central Park shortly after 1 p.m. The helicopters were among many emergency vehicles on-site for kids and parents to look at, including the Kosciusko Dive Team truck and several fire engines and ambulances.
