Volleyball Results: Aug. 29
GRACE 3, TAYLOR 0
Grace’s volleyball team got the Crossroads League season started in dominant fashion with a 3-0 win at Taylor on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers (7-2, 1-0 Crossroads League) sank Taylor in three sets, despite two being hotly contested.
Grace’s defense was stout in the match, holding the Trojans (2-2, 0-1 CL) to a .055 hitting percentage.
Midway into the opening set, Taylor pulled ahead 16-11.
But Grace seized momentum with six straight points thanks to the sharp serving of Makayla Bell. Caylie Teel had two kills during Grace’s spurt, leading Grace to a 17-16 lead.
The score remained close and was knotted at 23, and Teel again provided the key plays. She smashed a kill for Grace’s 24th point and secured the set win with a solo block on the next rally.
Grace’s edge continued into the second set. The Lady Lancers surged ahead 13-4 and cruised to a nine-point win.
The third set was practically inseparable. The set alone had 15 ties and seven lead changes. The Trojans were serving for the set at 24-23, but Teel’s kill sent the game into extra points.
Both teams traded the lead down the stretch. Taylor clung to a 28-27 lead, but Grace ended the match with three consecutive winners. Kelsee Zuidema had a kill and a block at the end to cement the road sweep.
Teel had a match-high 13 kills to go along with 11 digs and a solo block, and Zuidema added 11 kills on a .310 percentage and a pair of block assists.
Alexa Hill amassed 34 assists and three service aces to spearhead Grace’s offense, and Makaela Lochmueller tacked on eight kills.
Gina Novotny had a team-high 16 digs, former Warsaw Tiger standout Caroline Mayer chipped in 14 digs, and Bell had 10 digs.
The Lady Lancers continue league play on Sept. 5, hosting Marian at 7 p.m.
WARSAW 3, ELKHART MEMORIAL 0
Memorial put up a good fight, but Warsaw was able to pull out the Northern Lakes Conference victory 25-16, 25-21, 25-22 in Elkhart.
Kacy Bragg again led the Lady Tigers with 28 assists, eight blocks, six digs and two aces. Kennedy Lauck was huge at the net with eight kills and six blocks, Betty Barnett also played big with eight kills and two blocks and Katie Swanson had six kills and four aces.
Kylie Smith led the defense line with 15 digs to go with four aces and Liz Schmidt added five digs.
Warsaw (10-2, 1-0 NLC) visits Goshen Thursday night.
LAKEVIEW 8TH GRADE 2, TRITON 0
Lakeview earned a solid win over Triton at 25-7, 25-18.
Lakeview hung 23 aces on Triton, led by Tessa Graney’s seven and Kinsey Atkins’ six. Graney added four assists and Lauren Eastwood had a pair of kills and a block.
LAKEVIEW 7TH GRADE 2, TRITON 0
Lakeview moved to 2-1 overall with a big win over Triton at 25-3, 25-16.
Kenzie Chivington led the team with four aces and two assists. Olivia Devenney had six aces and Kali Ousley three aces. Collette Blackburn added two kills.
