GRACE 4, MICHIGAN-DEARBORN 0
Corinne Villalobos is a name that Michigan-Dearborn won’t soon forget. The junior scored all four goals for Grace’s women’s soccer team on Wednesday in a 4-0 rout.
The Lady Lancers improved to 3-0 on the young season, posting a shutout in each match.
On Wednesday, Grace dominated possession and shot opportunities from the opening kickoff. The Lady Lancers outshot the Wolverines 38-3 over the course of the 90 minutes, racking up 18 shots on goal. The Wolverines (0-1) were also blanked 10-0 in corner kicks.
It took Villalobos 20 minutes to record her first goal. Joana Schimmel advanced the ball along the left side of the field and found Allison Vroon in space. Vroon quickly found Villalobos, who buried a 20-yard shot just inside the far post.
Twelve minutes later, she scored again. Baylei Peters dribbled the ball dangerously into the Wolverines’ penalty box and squared a pass to Villalobos; the junior coolly slotted her shot to the back post at the 32:08 mark.
The teams went into halftime with Grace ahead 2-0. The Lady Lancers owned a shocking 24-0 advantage in shot attempts over the first 45 minutes.
Villalobos completed her hat trick in the 57th minute. Shelby Fort beat the Wolverines’ backline with a run, and she passed the ball ahead to Villalobos inside the box. UMD’s goalkeeper made a sharp 1-on-1 save against Villalobos, but Villalobos alertly gathered the rebound and rifled in her second try in front of the goal.
She added a fourth strike with 15 minutes to play. Peters again provided the pass after a well-built attack, teeing up Villalobos from 20 yards out for her fourth goal of the match.
Peters assisted two of Villalobos’s goals on Wednesday, adding two shots of her own. Villalobos had eight shots, Schimmel tallied six shots, and Liz Van Wormer added five more.
Bethany Blackwood, the reigning Crossroads League Defender of the Week, made two saves in 90 minutes. The freshman goalkeeper has yet to allow a goal to score against her in 270 minutes of action.
The Lady Lancers remain at home on Saturday, hosting Lindenwood-Belleville at 7 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.
