NORTHWOOD 26, JIMTOWN 0
It went about as well as NorthWood could have hoped in its opener with its backyard rivals to the north. The defense pitched a shutout and Hayden Snider set a record in the process as part of the shutout.
Snider returned an interception 102 yards for a touchdown, setting the program record for the longest interception return. That wasn’t the only defensive score for the Panthers as Ben Mestach recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
Bronson Yoder scored two touchdowns for NorthWood the conventional way, running in the ball from five and 14 yards in the first half. Yoder was also responsible for forcing the fumble that Mestach fell on for the score.
NorthWood outran Jimtown 254-145 on the night, led by Yoder’s 100 yards. Jaden Miller added 77 rushing yards and Nate Newcomer added 57 yards.
Ethan Devol led the Jimmies with eight carries for 83 yards.
NorthWood (1-0) will visit its neighbors to the east, Fairfield, next Friday.
TRITON 30, SOUTH CENTRAL 17
Delano Shumpert rushed for two touchdowns and scored another on a 29-yard pass from quarterback Bo Snyder, and the Trojans dropped 30 points to open at 1-0 in Union Mills Friday.
Snyder went 11 for 22 for 117 yards with two touchdown passes and two interceptions, and Triton’s dynamic offense racked up 303 yards, leading for all but a brief period in the second quarter after South Central took a tentative, 17-16 lead on a 44-yard touchdown completion from Kyle Schmack to Jake Osburn. Snyder’s first TD completion to Tye Orsund staked Triton to an initial 8-0 lead, and Shumpert’s first scoring run from 27 yards out in the second quarter gave the visitors a 16-3 cushion. His TD reception in the second gave his team the lead for the final time, 22-17, at the half.
The Trojans finished with 186 rushing yards split between five players, including 67 yards on 14 carries by Snyder and Shumpert’s 56 yards on two carries, and Orsund hauled in two catches for 35 yards. The Satellites threw for 153 yards, including 144 on 9-of-19 passing by Schmack.
Triton opens Hoosier North Athletic Conference play at home versus LaVille next week.
