Girls Soccer Results: Aug. 14
NORTHWOOD 6, MISHAWAKA 0
It was quite a hot start for the NorthWood girls soccer program. After reaching the regional round of the state tournament for the first time in program history, NorthWood started defense of its first sectional title with six goals in the first half against the Cavemen.
Emma Martz notched the first goal of the season with a strike in the fifth minute, assisted by Kali Parisi. The Panthers got an unassisted goal from Olivia Craven eight minutes later, then got four more goals in 12 minutes from Ariana Runge, Morgan Stickley and a pair from Cindy Barahona.
Martz assisted on two of the goals, Parisi got another helper on the Stickley strike and Kaicee Egolf got into the scorebook with an assist on Barahona’s second tally.
NorthWood outshot Mishawaka 23-3, leaving Kira Robinson little to do in a combined shutout with Liliana Lomeli. McKailah Harrison made 17 stops for the Cavemen.
In the undercard match, NorthWood’s JV defeated Mishawaka 3-0. Goal scorers for NorthWood were not provided.
NorthWood (1-0) will visit Bethany Christian Saturday for a noon kick.
LCA 2, BETHANY CHRISTIAN 2
LCA held a one-goal advantage at the half, but couldn’t hold it in a draw Tuesday against the Bruins.
Anna Reimink and Tori Calizo each scored in the first half for the Cougars, answering the opening goal by Bethany’s Meg Heinisch.
That score would remain the same until the 65th minute, when Heinisch notched her second goal of the match, knotting the game at two where it would stay through the final horn.
Both goalkeepers were busy, with LCA’s Maddie Paris making 13 stops and BC’s Sarah Hochstetler making 12.
Jessi Calizo and Carly O’Hara assisted on the two LCA goals.
“Still don’t like giving up the first goal in the game but for some reason it seems to calm the team down,” said LCA skipper Nat Raber. “It was a very physical game. Bethany had more possession time than we did, but I thought we had better scoring chances. Would have liked to walk away with the win, but Bethany is a good team and there is no shame in playing to a draw against a tough opponent. We just need to work on finishing and not turning the ball over deep in our zone. Still for the second game of the season, I am not unhappy with where we are.”
LCA (1-0-1) will host Kouts Friday night at 5:30 p.m.
