Dixie Day Car Show Celebrates Old and New
NORTH WEBSTER — Dixie Day is very much a celebration of the past — antiques malls, vintage snowmobiles, vintage tractors and The Dixie itself, an excursion boat built in 1929 — and the car show was no exception; nevertheless, modern versions of corvettes, camaros, mustangs and more were also on display, giving attendees a panoramic view of the history of cars, trucks and motorcycles.
This year’s best in show was a 1951 Kaiser owned by Mark and Lorie Shively of Albion. A rare vehicle, Mark joked is known only by those who owned one or knew someone who did. His was once owned by an uncle.
Kaisers were built in Willow Creek, Mich., between 1947 and 1955 in the same factory that produced the B-24 Liberator bombers in World War II; at the time it was the largest building in the world.
Other winners of the car show in 10 categories were Ben Bradway, Warsaw, whose 1969 Camaro Z-28 won best GM class; Karen and John Ostendorf, Dewart Lake, won best Ford with a 2006 Mustang; Keith Gunkel won best Mopar for his 1971 Duster; Ron Sellers of Winona Lake won the custom division for a 1968 Camaro; Jerry Martin, Leesburg, won best truck with a 1965 Ford Falcon; Titus Emery, Warsaw, won best foreign bike with a 1964 Honda CA 95; Gary Dant won best vintage bike with a 1937 Harley Davidson UL II; Monte Taylor, Leesburg, won best American bike with his 2005 Big Dog Mastiff.
In the vintage tractor show, awards were voted on by Dixie Day Festival attendees. The people’s choice award of $100 went to Todd Sobieralski, Niles, Mich., for his 1956 Oliver Super 55. Second place and $50 went to Mike Walther, Sydney, for a 1950 Farmall. Third place and $25 went to Dan Ransbottom, Claypool, for his 1969 Allis Chalmers.
