Students Get Feet Wet With Lake Education
KOSCIUSKO – The Lilly Center recently hosted the Baker Youth Club for an afternoon of hands-on learning at Limitless Park, located in Winona Lake. Despite a 30 percent chance of rain, almost 30 students (ranging in age from kindergarten to early high school) arrived to learn about the lakes and their inhabitants.
During the first half-hour of the program, that 30 percent chance jumped to 100 percent. Anyone not under the pavilion was deluged with warm summer rain.
“It looked like everyone had jumped into the lake and climbed back out again,” said Caitlin Yoder, the Lilly Center’s education coordinator. “But the rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits,” she added.
Despite the weather, the kids were more than happy to continue learning.
The students cycled through three stations. The first used tug-of-war to teach adaptation and the food chain; the second taught the anatomy of a fish; the third explored the basics of fishing, including baiting, casting and reeling in the line. Afterward, the students promptly answered follow-up questions, showing a new knowledge of a fish’s eyes and fins and what to do after catching one.
