Happy 89th Birthday, Dixie Boat
North Webster — The Dixie Boat held its 89th birthday Saturday, July 21. The Dixie is the number one attraction in Northern Indiana, bringing over 15,000 riders last year with this year’s number well ahead of that.
The Dixie has become a part of North Webster’s history and character. Before decent roads became available, the Dixie delivered lakeshore residents mail, groceries and other supplies. As time past and the Dixie saw several captains, it retired from delivering supplies and became a relaxing ride for visitors. Some come every weekend to appreciate the smooth ride, natural beauty of the lake and historical narration.
Having been refurbished various times, original pieces of the boat still remain. Present in celebration was Scott Schaffer, step-son of Tom Plew. Plew renovated the interior and exterior of the boat, including the complete rebuilding of the Dixie’s paddlewheel.
