Former Fort Wayne Firefighter Charged With Theft
FORT WAYNE — A former Fort Wayne fire inspector has been charged with one count of theft in connection with an investigation where upwards of $50,000 was taken from a charitable organization where he served as treasurer.
An arrest warrant was issued for Daniel A. Newport, 53, on Wednesday and he was charged with one felony count of theft. He was taken into custody and has since been released according to a news release from Indiana State Police.
In late December fo 2017 an Indiana State Police detective began investigating allegations that Newport had taken large sums of money from a charitable organization known as Guns-N-Hoses. Newport served as the organizations treasurer.
The detective determined that the money had been taken between 2000 and December of 2017.
Sources told NewsChannel Thursday evening that Newport resigned his position with the fire department this week.
