TERRE HAUTE – Warsaw continues to see a rich future in its track pipeline after results came in from the Indiana Middle School Track and Field Championships.
Lakeview’s Kyle Dawson won the state championship in the shot put and also was sixth in discus while Edgewood’s Abby Sanner won a discus championship and was fourth in the shot put and teammate Hart Marin had a trio of top-fives, including a championship in the high jump.
Dawson’s shot put throw was impressive, not only a full four-and-a-half feet further than the next competitor, Hunter Bianski of Churubusco at 47-1, but breaking the Lakeview school record and landing him third nationally. Dawson’s discus throw of 139-04 was also a personal record. Aaron Jacquay of Busco won the event at 161-09.
Busco would win the boys team title with 43.5 points, topping runner-up Westview’s 36.5. Busco had Nick Nondorf finish second in the 200 hurdles and fourth in pole vault, Devin Clark sixth in pole vault and Ethan Hille fifth in long jump to bolster its total. Westview had the top 4×800 relay team.
Lakeview finished tied for 17th in the boys standings, Edgewood 42nd.
Marin had a busy and successful day, winning the high jump with a clearance of 5-4, and was runner-up in the 100 hurdles at 15.94. Marin also took fifth in the 200 hurdles at 32.75. Sanner claimed her title in discus with a heave of 101-5, and came in fourth in shot put at 38-2.5.
Edgewood as a team would finish second behind Busco, 53-37. Fairfield cracked the top 10 with 16 points.
Highlighting Busco’s performances was a championship from Katie Graft in the 400, who also finished fifth in the 1600. Hannah Boersema was second in the 200 hurdles and fifth in the 100 hurdles, Isabella Zuk was second in long jump and third in the 200 hurdles, and Brelle Shearer and Cara Debolt were second and fourth, respectively, in pole vault.
Fairfield’s Chynzie Howell won the 2,400 run at 8:38.22 and was third in the 1,600. Lincoln’s Sydney Rice was fifth in the shot put and Westview’s Lucy Rensberger was eighth in discus.
