Baseball
Tippecanoe Valley’s baseball team lost a 7-6 heartbreaker with visiting Pioneer Tuesday.
The Vikings responded to a big five-run third with an even bigger six-run bottom half of the inning to take a tenuous lead into the fifth, but the Panthers plated two runs in the inning and held on through two-and-a-half scoreless innings for the win.
Ethan Yates batted in two runs, and Lucas Walters, Layne Prater, Wes Melanson and Tanner Trippiedi recorded Valley’s five hits of the night.
Nate Johnson was 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs to lead the Panthers at the plate.
Drew Harman took the loss in the start for Valley, giving up five earned runs off six hits and a walk in three innings of work before giving way to Prater in the fourth. Prater surrendered four hits for two runs with three strikeouts, and Yates closed it out, giving up one hit in a shutout seventh.
Mason Shnurpel got the win lasting six innings while giving up all six Valley runs — five earned — off three walks and five hits. Johnson finished it off, throwing just 10 pitches in a one-two-three seventh.
Pioneer improves to 10-6. Valley slips to 3-13.
The Vikings host Peru in TRC action tonight.
