Wawasee Sports Wrap: May 7
Boys Golf
Wawasee picked up another win ahead of the Northern Lakes Conference grind after defeating Bethany Christian 170-182 at South Shore.
Dillon Drake had one of his better efforts of the spring, posting a two-over 38 to medal the match. A 42 from Zach Leedy and 43 from Luke Weisser showed well on the home course, and a 47 from Evan Dippon wrapped up the Warrior scoring.
Bethany’s top four played fairly well in its rare appearance at SSGC, with Jacob Saylor posting a 43, Kory Kern and Micah Shenk both carding 46s and Kolton Meerzo one back at 47.
“Dillon continues his good play,” stated Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “We still had a couple of kids finish with big scores on their last hole.”
Wawasee (6-3) jumps into NLC dual play Tuesday at Spring Meadow against Northridge.
Softball
Graceanne Kerlin sat on an 0-2 pitch and drove it deep to left field, doubling home Aubrey Kuhn for the gamewinner in a 5-4, eight inning NLC game Monday in Syracuse.
Kerlin’s double came with two outs in the eighth, the win a payback of sorts on NorthWood which beat Wawasee in nine innings earlier this spring.
Kerlin started the Wawasee rally in the seventh, doubling to start the inning. After NorthWood got the next two outs, Madison Mottern reached on an error to score the first run, then Amanda Jenkins tripled home Mottern to tie the game at four.
Delaney Hare also had an RBI for the Warriors and Kerlin added a single for a three-hit night.
Kiaundra Olson got the win in relief, allowing one run in five innings of work.
Alexis Klotz got NorthWood going with a three-run homer in the third, and the other Amanda Jenkins from NorthWood, had two hits and an RBI.
Madison Miller was the tough-luck loser in the circle, on the hook for the five runs despite Gracie Clark giving up Kerlin’s game-winning double.
Wawasee swung the hot bats in the JV contest, drubbing NorthWood 17-7. Casey Drake rapped a triple and drove in three runs and Ciandra Ervin took the win in the circle.
The Wawasee varsity (7-11, 4-6 NLC) will meet Northridge Wednesday while the JV (7-5) will travel to Fairfield.
Baseball
Brock Miller had himself a night for the Panther baseball club, collecting a pair of hits and three RBIs in a 7-0 win over Wawasee in Nappanee.
Miller took a 2-2 pitch into the outfield grass for two run to get the Panthers started. That was all Alec Holcomb needed who fired six innings of three-hit ball.
Miller would add another RBI single for a NorthWood lineup that got its production from the bottom of the order, where hitters six through nine had four of the six hits and scored six of the seven runs.
Carter Woody threw well for the Warriors, giving up just three hits and one earned run in 5.1 innings, striking out five. Woody also had one of the four hits.
Wawasee (11-4) won the JV contest over the Panthers by a 4-1 count.
Wawasee (8-10, 4-6 NLC) will host Northridge on Wednesday.
Girls Tennis
Wawasee settled at 1-6 in the NLC after its 5-0 loss at Plymouth.
Taking on the hosts at the site of the NLC Championships starting Wednesday, Wawasee found no luck in any of its ventures.
Plymouth gave up just five points in its singles play – all in the three and two win from Kyla Heckaman over Elizabeth Kleopfer at No. 2. Cortni Cook and Miranda German both pitched shutouts against Kendra Doerr and Kennedy Church.
The doubles courts were about as lopsided, with McKenzie Scheetz and Leah Smith throwing a shutout at Kabrea Rostochak and Courtney Larson at No. 1 while Mary Beatty and Audie Plothow gave up just two points to Brianna Haessig and Molly Jones.
The Wawasee JV had plenty of work in a 7-5 result in favor of Plymouth. All five of Wawasee’s court wins came in doubles play, with the teams of Stephanie Ruiz and Ava Harker along with Tate Cowan and Anah Sommers each taking two wins, Sailor Davis-York and Kaitlin Graber also getting a win.
The Wawasee JV will have the rest of the week off for the varsity NLC tourney, then prep for its final match of the season next Monday against Whitko.
The NLC Championships begin three days of play starting Wednesday with opening round bracket play. Thursday’s semi-finals and consolation rounds as well as the championship rounds will also take place at Plymouth and start at 4:30 p.m. with first-available matchups. Warsaw enters the tournament with command of the team points after running through the round robin at 7-0 after sweeping Goshen Monday afternoon.
