NorthWood Sports Wrap: April 30
Baseball
The NorthWood baseball team fell 12-5 to Goshen.
The RedHawks used a four-run third inning and a five-run sixth frame to hand the Panthers their first Northern Lakes Conference loss of the season.
Austin Bontrager had the big hit in the third for Goshen with a three-run double. Joey Peebles added an RBI double in the frame for the RedHawks.
Goshen, which moves into a tie atop the NLC with NorthWood at 6-1, had eight extra-base hits in the win. The RedHawks piled up seven doubles in the contest.
The Panthers, now 12-2 overall, got home runs off the bats of Payton Bear in the first frame and from Brock Miller in the sixth inning.
Alec Holcomb took the pitching loss for the Panthers. He gave up six runs over four innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Both Bontrager and Peebles, who had a homer, drove in four runs for Goshen.
Bear continued his stellar offensive season with a 3-4 showing to pace the 13-hit attack for the Panthers.
The trio of Hunter Warren, Kyler Hauptil and Matt Dutkowski all each had multiple hits as well for NorthWood.
The Panthers, who were ranked No. 8 in Class 3-A in the latest coaches poll released Monday, drop to 6-1 in NLC play. NorthWood had won 20 in a row in NLC action after going a perfect 14-0 a year ago to claim the conference championship.
NorthWood hosts Triton Tuesday night and plays at NLC foe Concord on Wednesday.
Softball
Madison Miller had her strikeout game going for NorthWood.
The Panther pitcher fanned 14 batters to pace her team past host Goshen 7-3.
Miller allowed just five hits as NorthWood collected the Northern Lakes Conference win.
The Panthers scored one run in the third and then plated a trio of tallies in both the sixth and seventh innings to build a 7-0 lead. The RedHawks scored three times in the seventh.
The trio of Gracie Clark, Alexis Klotz and Kylie Hochstetler each had two hits to pace the 11-hit attack for the winners.
Kennedy Hochstetler, along with Lil Lomeli, Grace Anglemyer, Amanda Jenkins and Kylie Thornton, each had one hit for the Panthers.
NorthWood plays at Concord in another NLC game Wednesday evening.
Girls Tennis
The NorthWood girls tennis team picked up a 3-2 win at Bremen.
The Panthers won a pair of singles matches en route to the non-conference win.
Reegan Miller notched a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles for NorthWood. Gretchen Adams posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles play.
The Panthers also prevailed at No. 1 doubles as Kennedy Wiens and Betsy Nunemaker won 6-4, 6-0.
Alex Jesse, the No. 1 singles player for NorthWood, had to retire in the first set of her match.
NorthWood won the junior varsity action 7-3. Singles winners for the JV Panthers were Kate Stillson, Kennedy Kuhn and Jessica Kramp. Winners in doubles play were the team of Caroline Mullet and Olivia Feller (twice), along with Leslie Olvera and Kelsi Blucker and Paige Henschen and Abigail Richner.
NorthWood improves to 7-3 in varsity play. The Panthers play at Warsaw Tuesday, at Wawasee Wednesday and host Elkhart Memorial at Goshen College Friday in a trio of NLC matches.
