Warsaw Sports Wrap: April 27
Softball
The Warsaw softball team dropped a 17-6 final to Concord.
The host Tigers fell to the visiting Minutemen in the Northern Lakes Conference contest.
Lindsey Bradley led the Tigers as she belted a three-run home run for the hosts. Bradley had a pair of hits to lead her team.
Izzy Dittmar also had an RBI for the Tigers, who were outhit 12-6 by Concord.
Courtney Chookie took the pitching loss for Warsaw.
Yadi Gomez led Concord, which is undefeated in NLC play, with a grand-slam homer. Alexis Kern notched the pitching win.
Warsaw falls to 5-6overall and sits at 3-3 in the NLC.
The Tigers host Huntington North Saturday morning.
Baseball
The Warsaw baseball team picked up a league win at Concord.
The Tigers topped the Minutemen by a 9-4 final in Northern Lakes Conference play in Dunlap.
Jared Hawley and Brendon Perry each had a pair of hits for the Tigers, who stopped a six-game losing streak.
Matt Shoemaker had a three-run double for Warsaw. Caden Bowers notched the pitching win for the Tigers with Ian Glogovsky getting the save.
Warsaw improves to 3-8 overall and goes to 1-5 in league play.
The Tigers play at Elkhart Memorial Monday night in another NLC game.
Boys Track
The Warsaw boys track team finished in fifth place in its own Max Truex Invitational.
The Tigers scored 63 points in the nine-team event hosted each year in honor of former Warsaw Olympian Max Truex.
Carroll claimed the team title for the third straight year with 135 points. Homestead was second with 88 points with Penn placing third with 76 points.
Places for the meet were scored by the combined performances of two athletes from each team in each event.
The duo of Hunter Metzger and Nicholas Bazzoni led the Tigers in the meet. The pair of pole vaulters each notched personal-best performances to finish in a tie for first place overall with Carroll.
Metzger cleared a top height of 14-0, while Bazzoni went 12-6 for coach Matt Thacker’s team. Metzler’s previous best was 12-6, while Bazzoni’s was 12-0.
The Tigers also finished in second place in the relays portion of the 4 X 800 and the discus events.
In individual competition, John Svinarich was third in the discus for the Tigers with a throw of 143-10 and fourth in the shot put with an effort of 48-0.
Tyler Metzinger cleared 5-10 to place fourth in the high jump. Lucas Howett was sixth in the 3,200 in a personal-best effort of 10:04.26.
The trio of Justin Becker of Carroll and Adam Gasaway and Jacob Marsh of LaPorte were honored as the top athletes Friday night. Becker, who won the 100 and 200 and was on the first place 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 teams, was named the Most Outstanding Sprinter. Gasaway won the Most Outstanding Distance honor after placing first in the 800 and second in the 1,600. Marsh was saluted as the Most Outstanding Field Event recipient after he won the high jump and placed fifth in the long jump.
Warsaw hosts NorthWood and Plymouth in NLC action Wednesday evening.
