NorthWood Sports Wrap: April 24
Girls Tennis
The NorthWood girls tennis team edged past Goshen 3-2.
The Panthers posted a pair of dominating wins and a three-set victory to earn the close Northern Lakes Conference win over the host RedHawks.
Reegan Miller cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Anna Podgorski at No. 1 singles play for the Panthers.
The senior tandem of Kennedy Wiens and Betsy Nunemaker continued to roll with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brooke Grewe and Lucy Kramer at No. 1 doubles for NorthWood.
The clinching point came from Gretchen Adams as she won 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Kathryn Detwiler on the No. 2 singles court.
Goshen got a win from Raina Shreiner-Barger at No. 3 singles as she defeated Lauren Mikel 6-3, 6-2. The No. 2 doubles team of Sophie Kirkton and Sage Christner topped Alex Jesse and Riley Graber 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 for the RedHawks.
NorthWood improves to 6-3 overall and moves to 2-2 in NLC action.
Goshen won the junior varsity match 4-3. Winning for NorthWood were Kate Stillson at No. 1 singles and the doubles teams of Caroline Mullet and Olivia Feller and Kelsi Blucker and Abigail Richner.
NorthWood plays at Bremen Monday.
Softball
The NorthWood softball team dropped a 5-4 final to Northridge.
The host Raiders scored three runs in the first and two more in the fourth en route to the Northern Lakes Conference win.
NorthWood scored a pair of runs in their final at bat in the seventh inning.
Gracie Clark and Lili Lomeli each had a home run to lead the Panthers.
NorthWood hosts Elkhart Memorial in NLC play Wednesday evening.
Baseball
The Northwood baseball team stayed in control of the conference race with a 2-1 win over Northridge.
The Panthers got a tremendous pitching performance from Alec Holcomb to edge the Raiders in the Northern Lakes Conference contest in Nappanee.
Junior Holcomb went the distance on the hill for the hosts, allowing just five hits while striking out seven and walking none in his complete game gem.
Peyton Bear slugged a solo homer in the third inning to pace the Panthers. Brant Mast also drove in a run for the winners, who also had five hits in the game.
Sophomore starter Davis Enfield went four innings for the Raiders, allowing four hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
NorthWood, which is scheduled to play six games this week, improves to 8-1 overall and moves to 4-0 in NLC play. The Raiders fall to 5-3 overall and go to 2-2 in the NLC.
NorthWood plays at NLC foe Elkhart Memorial and Northridge travels to Warsaw for a league game Wednesday evening.
