NorthWood Sports Wrap: April 23
Baseball
The NorthWood baseball team picked up an 8-3 league win at Warsaw.
The Panthers, who improve to 7-1 overall, trailed 3-1 early. NorthWood responded with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to win the Northern Lakes Conference contest.
The Tigers scored three runs in the home half of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Jared Hawley had the key hit in the frame for the hosts with a double.
NorthWood took the lead for good in the fourth as Brock Miller clubbed a solo homer and Matt Dutkowski added an RBI double in the frame.
Miller and Sawyer Warren each had RBI hits in the fifth inning as the Panthers scored three more times.
Warren notched the win on the mound as he went six innings. He allowed just three hits with six strikeouts. Preston King worked the final inning for the winners.
Miller, Warren, Dutkowski, Peyton Bear and Alec Holcomb each had multiple hits as the Panthers finished with 11 hits.
Hawley and Michael Nunez each had two hits for Warsaw. Starter Matt Francis took the pitching loss.
NorthWood is 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the NLC. The Tigers fall to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in league play.
The Warsaw junior varsity team continued its outstanding season with a 5-2 win over NorthWood. Brock Poe had two hits and scored three runs, while Drew McCleary had two doubles and Luis Alonzo had two hits and two RBI for the winners. Jacob Hutcherson notched the pitching win as the JV Tigers improved to 8-0-1.
Warsaw hosts Northridge Wednesday in NLC play. NorthWood hosts Northridge Tuesday.
Girls Tennis
The NorthWood girls tennis team picked up a conference win over Northridge.
The Panthers notched a 4-1 victory over the Raiders in Northern Lakes Conference play at Goshen College.
Reegan Miller and Gretchen Adams each won in straight sets at the top two singles spots to pace the Panthers. Miller topped Riley Wheatley 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 and Adams stopped Victoria Oakes 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2.
The Panthers won on both doubles courts as the team of Kennedy Wiens and Betsy Nunemaker beat Kylee Bontrager and Brynne Gayler 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1. The duo of Alex Jesse and Riley Graber outlasted Carlee Schroeder and Peyton Kieper 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 2 play.
Sarah Hartman of the Raiders topped Lauren Mikel 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
NorthWood improves to 5-3 overall and is 1-2 in the NLC.
Northridge won the junior varsity match 5-4. Jessica Kramp won in singles play for NorthWood. Also winning for the JV Panthers were the doubles teams of Caroline Mullet and Olivia Feller, Kelsi Blucker and Abigail Richner and Morgan Berry and Kennedy Kuhn.
NorthWood plays at NLC foe Goshen Tuesday night.
