Human Skull Found Near South Bend Park May Be Native American
SOUTH BEND — A human skull that was discovered Friday night along Boland Drive may delay work on a paved trail that the city is building between trails on Portage Avenue and Riverside Drive, just north of Pinhook Park.
Local experts say it’s possible that the skull may be from an Indian burial site. Police received a call about the skull at 8 p.m. Friday after some youths discovered it in the dirt that contractors have been clearing to prepare for the trail, said Wendi Scoles, a deputy coroner who responded to the site Friday along with an officer from Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources.
She said officials called on a University of Notre Dame staff member with expertise in archaeology who said that the skull appears to be hundreds of years old. She said the skull and the site will now be investigated by the DNR’s Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology.
City parks Director Aaron Perri said the city will put the trail work on hold while the case is probed. The city was planning to complete the trail by the end of this year. South Bend police were doing regular patrols of the site on Sunday.
