Kosciusko County Jail Announces New Program For Opioid Abusers
KOSCIUSKO — The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department has announced a new program that will be starting at the Kosciusko County Jail. The Bowen Center, Advanced Medical Staff and the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department are starting a Vivitrol program for inmates nearing a release date from jail that have been identified as opioid abusers.
The program was approved to begin in an Vivitrol Advisory Board meeting yesterday morning, April 18, at Warsaw City Hall. The meeting was attended by staff from the Bowen Center, Doctor Michael Mitcheff, the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office and the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
The program involves a current inmate that is approaching release who has been identified as at risk for reoffending due to opioid addiction. That inmate will be provided access to assistance for the medical treatments needed, placed into aftercare through local organizations and provided access to continued services through Bowen Center. The application of the Vivitrol to avoid opioid abuse will be administered before release from jail to aid in the subject’s recovery.
The program is being started as a test platform for possible expansion into other programs currently in operation such as community corrections and probation.
