Warsaw Sports Wrap: April 12
Girls Tennis
The Warsaw girls tennis team was dominant in downing Columbia City 4-1 in its home opener Thursday.
The host Tigers rolled to convincing wins on all three singles courts en route to topping the Eagles.
Senior Liza Lewis led the way for coach Rick Orban’s deep and talented lineup. Lewis posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles for the Tigers.
Ella Knight won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for Warsaw and Alyssa Zellers completed the singles sweep by winning on the No. 3 court 6-0, 6-0.
The outstanding singles lineup all return from a year ago when Warsaw won its second straight regional title.
The Tigers also got a big win at No. 2 doubles as Taylor Shoaf and Reagan Merchant posted a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Columbia City’s No. 1 doubles team of Hannah Behm and Jayme Acres notched their team’s point with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Rachel Boyle and Amy Herendeen.
The Warsaw junior varsity won 11-1. Winning in singles play for Warsaw were Libby Jenkins, Maddie Ray and Kat Josellis. Also victorious were the doubles teams of Rachel Yeager and Addison Marshall, Anna Grill and Izzy Ray, Abby Rucoi and Annie Burnett, Charlotte Grandon and Gracie Lewis, Mikayla Roller and Heather Rickert, Dezeray Miller and Faith Delp, Sophie Olson and Audrey Turley and Oliver Reiner and Kat Josellis.
Warsaw improves to 1-1 on the season. The Tigers host their own varsity tournament Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
Boys Golf
The Warsaw golf squad dropped a match to Fort Wayne Canterbury.
The hosts shot a 170, while the Tigers finished at 176 in the nine-hole match at Chestnut Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne.
Tommy Meier paced the Tigers with a 40.
Also competing for Warsaw were Luke Delp, Sam Yeager, Jacob LaLonde and Zach LaLonde.
The Tigers will host the Don Dicken Invitational on Saturday at Stonehenge.
The Warsaw JV team bested Canterbury 189-200. Chase Byron led the winners with a 42. Also contributing to the win were Tucker Carlile, Noah Pequignot, Lucas Rhodes and Mason Whitaker.
The JV team will take part in the Round Barn Invitational on Saturday in Rochester.
Baseball
A strong Huntington North team outscored Warsaw 15-6 in non-conference action.
The host Vikings piled up 15 hits, including five of the extra base variety, to improve to 5-1 on the season. Huntington North scored five runs in the fourth inning and tallied three runs in the first, third and fifth frames.
The Tigers, who fall to 1-1, had nine hits and scored three times in the fifth inning.
Liam Patton had a big night at the plate for Warsaw as he slugged a pair of homers and drove in four runs.
Brendan Perry collected three hits for the Tigers. Starter Caden Bowers, one of six pitchers used by Warsaw, took the loss on the hill. He went three innings and allowed four earned runs.
Jarret Gray had four hits, including a pair of doubles, to pace the winners. Levi Bennett and Zach Daugherty each had three hits for the Vikings.
The Warsaw junior varsity team rolled past Huntington North 24-4. Brock Poe led the offensive onslaught with four hits and four RBI. Brayden Lane had three hits and four RBI for the JV Tigers, now 2-0. Joey Springer notched the pitching win by going three innings and allowing no earned runs with four strikeouts.
Warsaw plays at Columbia City Friday evening and travels to South Bend Riley for a doubleheader on Saturday.
Boys Track
The Warsaw boys track team turned back a strong challenge Thursday night.
The Tigers opened their outdoor season by downing Elkhart Memorial 66-61 in Northern Lakes Conference action at the Tiger Athletic Complex.
Alijah Wade was a double winner on the track to lead the way for coach Matt Thacker’s squad. Wade took top honors in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes with winning times of 11.43 and 23.09 respectively.
Eli Owen also had a strong night as he won the 300 hurdles in a time of 43.25 and picked up a second place finish in the 110 hurdles.
Connor Lennox also scored a pair of big wins for the Tigers. He won the 400 in a top time of 54.86 and also cleared 6-2 to win the high jump competition.
Senior distance ace Lucas Howett won the 3,200 in a time of 10:17.13.
John Svinarich had a pair of key field event wins as he took first in both the shot put with a throw of 45 4.5 and the discus with a top toss of 141-01.
The Tigers also got key second place finishes from Justin Fleming (800), Tyler Metzinger (high jump), Hunter Metzler (pole vault), Jayton Brock (long jump) and Nick Miller (shot put).
Warsaw returns to action next Thursday at Wawasee for an NLC triangular versus the host Warriors along with Northridge.
