South Bend Takes Steps To End Homelessness
SOUTH BEND — The city of South Bend wants to get in front of the homeless problem.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg said the city will invest $1.4 million in a gateway transitional housing shelter, in addition to a weather amnesty shelter and other amenities.
He said the city has to balance compassion and safety.
“At the end of our day, our biggest goal for anyone who is experiencing homelessness to move them out of homelessness,” the mayor said. “There are a lot of efforts motivated by compassion to make things easier for people who are homeless.”
The mayor believes the gateway center will be up and running this year.
