Fairfield’s Garber Among IBCA Coaches Of The Year
INDIANAPOLIS – Six Indiana high school girls basketball coaches and six boys coaches have been chosen as 2018 Bob King Coaches of the Year by their peers in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Jack Campbell of Chesterton, Brodie Garber of Fairfield, Debbie Guckenberger of Brownsburg, Stacy E. Mitchell of Warren Central, Bob Meier of Castle and Jason Simpson of Greensburg have been selected as girls coach honorees for the 2017-18 season through voting that occurred from late January through early March, IBCA executive director Steve Witty said.
Michael Edison of LaVille, Rob Yoder of Westview, Daniel Cox of New Castle, Matt English of Beech Grove, Scott McClelland of Morristown and Todd Sturgeon of Floyd Central have been selected as boys coach honorees.
Campbell and Garber as well as Edison and Yoder were voted from District 1 based on IHSAA district boundaries.
Garber led Fairfield to a 24-3 campaign that included sectional, regional and Northeast Corner Conference championships. Garber has directed the Falcons to a 93-48 record in six seasons, annually finishing in the upper half of the NECC during his tenure. This was the best season in program history, the Falcons claiming their first regional crown. At season’s end, he was named 2018 Coach of the Year by the Goshen News. Garber is a 1995 graduate of Fairfield.
Edison guided LaVille to a 23-1 season that included the championship of the Hoosier North Conference at 7-0. In 10 seasons, Edison has directed the Lancers to a 144-87 record with sectional titles in 2013 and 2015. Edison was a JV coach for one season at Concord and an assistant coach for seven seasons at Plymouth, his alma mater, before becoming head coach at LaVille.
Yoder led Westview to a 28-2 season that included sectional and regional titles, plus a co-championship of the Northeast Corner Conference at 10-1 Yoder’s Westview team handed Edison’s LaVille team its only loss of the season in the sectional. Yoder’s teams have gone 257-115 in his 15 seasons at Westview, his alma mater. During his tenure, the Warriors have won eight sectionals, four regionals and one semi-state. He was named Elkhart Truth Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2014, and he was honored as KPC Media Coach of the Year in 2006, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Yoder will be an assistant coach for the 2018 Indiana Junior All-Stars.
