Volunteer Program Designed To Help Flood Victims
KOSCIUSKO — Local residents who have experienced damage and hardship due to the recent flooding may be able to apply for assistance through the Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters.
According to Tressa Nichols, a VOAD coordinator, “survivors needing assistance with home cleanup from the recent flooding may call (800) 451-1954 through March 17.” Nichols said those same people can register or apply online at crisiscleanup.org.
“This service is available for flood victims in Indiana, Michigan and Illinois,” Nichols said.
“The hotline will connect survivors with reputable and vetted relief agencies that will assist in debris cleanup and mucking out, as they are able, after the recent floods,” she continued. “All services are free, but service is not guaranteed due to the overwhelming need. All debris will be taken to the curb to be disposed of by the municipality or homeowner.”
Nichols said the hotline will alert multiple relief agencies that survivors need help. All services are performed by vetted and reputable relief agencies and members of VOAD. Response times will vary so residents are asked to be patient while the teams receive and organize their response to help.
Nichols added that the hotline cannot assist with social services such as food, clothing, shelter, insurance, or questions about FEMA registration.
In addition, those wanting to volunteer can also go to the website.
“Coordinating relief efforts in a disaster can be a disaster all by itself,” she said. “Lots of organizations want to help, but don’t know where to go, or when. This website works kind of like Uber, for volunteer organizations and victims. It takes out the middle man, and allows organizations to connect directly with people who need help.”
