Northridge Girls Swim Sectional: Warriors Finish Fourth
MIDDLEBURY – The Wawasee girls swim team wrapped up its season with a strong showing Saturday in the finals of the Northridge Sectional.
The Warriors scored 172 points to claim a fourth-place finish in the final team standings.
The host Raiders, as expected, dominated to the tune of scoring 556 points to easily out distance runner-up Concord’s 449. Elkhart Central was third with 328 points with Wawasee fourth. NorthWood finished in eighth place with 111 points.
Northridge won 10 of the 12 event titles, led by double champion Elsa Fretz. The Raider freshman won the 200 freestyle championship in 1:50.26 and claimed top honors in the 100 freestyle race in 49.86.
Sydnee Emerson was also a two-time sectional champ for the Raiders. She won the 200 IM in 2:03.82 and also took first in the 100 fly in 56.09.
Wawasee’s Ella Park turned in a big effort Saturday. The Warrior sophomore was fourth in the 500 freestyle event in 5:22.31 and placed seventh in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.49.
Freshman Rileigh Atwood of the Warriors, who set the school record in the 100 breaststroke race in the prelims on Thursday night, finished in fifth place in the finals. She clocked in at 1:07.89 after going 1.07.87 in the prelims.
“This is a great group of girls and a fantastic way to end the season,” said Wawasee coach Julie Robinson.
Senior Kate Jarvis of NorthWood came up a little short in her bid to set the school mark in the 100 freestyle. Jarvis earned an eighth-place finish Saturday in 55.89. The school record is 55.05.
Northridge, which won its 14th sectional title in the past 17 years, won all three relay events. The Raiders took the 200 medley relay in 1:44.94, the 200 free relay in 1:34.43 and the 400 free relay in 3:27.25.
The Raiders also got championship performances from Sara Troyer in diving (567.40), Caitlin Clark in the 500 free (5:10.37) and Haley Dygert in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.89).
Concord’s Maddison Lantz won the other two individual events. She captured the 50 free in 23.75 and was tops in the 100 backstroke in 56.84.
The sectional champions advance to the State Finals next Friday and Saturday at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis. Prelims are set for Friday at 6 p.m. with the finals on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
