Blevins Found Not Guilty In Stabbing Case
WARSAW — It only took jurors one hour to find Scott Blevins, Warsaw, not guilty on charges of battery by means of a deadly weapon and criminal mischief.
The jurors began their deliberation at 5:30 p.m. tonight, Jan. 30 following a one-day trial. Throughout the day, the court heard from five witnesses for the state. Three of the witnesses were police officers who responded to the scene after the incident allegedly occurred. Despite all the testimonies, there was a lack of evidence regarding the knife and a lack of eyewitnesses to the actual incident.
Judge David Cates thanked the jury for their time and efforts during the trial. “You’ve kept your attention and you’ve worked really hard. You’ve done a very patriotic duty.”
Blevins was also thankful for the jury’s service and stated “I’m just glad we’ve got good citizens,” when asked for a comment on the outcome on the trial.
There was one matter to finish up before the court closed for the evening. An additional charge of possession of paraphernalia had reached a plea agreement before today’s trial. All parties agreed to continue with sentencing tonight while everyone was still present.
Cates sentenced Blevins to serve a 60 executed sentence. Blevins had spent 30 days incarcerated before posting his bond and therefore had enough good time credit to satisfy the sentence.
When Cates asked Blevins if he had anything to say regarding the possession charge, Blevins replied that he had learned his lesson.
