Edgewood Cagers Claim Championships
BREMEN – The Edgewood Middle School boys basketball teams capped outstanding seasons in championship fashion Saturday.
Both teams, who combined to post a 40-4 mark this year, won the NELMSC Tournament titles at Bremen.
The Edgewood 8th grade team defeated Milford 28-16 in the title game.
Jackson Dawson led the champions with 14 points. Daylan Vermilyer and Isaiah Courtois each scored five points for the winners.
Edgewood outlasted Lakeview 45-44 in triple overtime in its first game Saturday.
Dawson tossed in 22 points to lead the winners. Vermilyer and Caden Graham each had five points.
The trio of Kyle Dawson, Judah Simfukwe and Jack Yeager each scored 11 points to lead Lakeview. The Tigers finish their season at 18-4.
The championship team included Dane Koontz, Graham, Austin Elder, John West, Noah Shepherd, Jeremy Ryman, Mason Kroll, Vermilyer, Dawson, Silas Mast, Courtois, Will Burnett, Ian Shepherd, Daniel Wurtsmith, Grant Thacker and Lucas Wrenn.
Edgewood, which was coached by Eric Heckaman, finishes with a 19-3 record.
The Edgewood 7th grade squad topped Wawasee 38-19 in the title game.
Theo Katris and Jack Murrell each scored eight points to lead the champions. Russ Winchester, Neez Smith and Drew Heckaman each had six points.
Edgewood defeated Lakeview 43-32 in its first game Saturday. Murrell led the winners with 13 points. Winchester scored 11 and Katris had nine.
Jaxson Gould and Reilley Wood each scored 14 points to lead Lakeview. The Tigers finish at 18-4 on the season.
The championship team included Parker Bonifield, Gavin Vermilyer, Trey Dilley, Smith, Nick Katris, Sam Slocum, Ben Jackson, Hayden Parker, Winchester, Murrell, Heckaman and Theo Katris.
The Tigers, who were coached by Jeremy Walters, won their final 21 games to post a 21-1 mark.
