US 6 Closed East of SR 15 For Accident Cleanup
NEW PARIS — The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department has closed US 6 between SR 15 north of Milford and CR 25 in Elkhart County. The highway is closed to clean up the remnants of an accident involving a Ford pickup truck and a semi. The accident occurred shortly before 10 a.m.
According to witnesses at the scene, the pickup was traveling eastbound on US 6. An Elkhart County Highway dump truck was also traveling eastbound ahead of the pickup and was stopped to make a left turn onto CR 25. The dump truck driver reported that he saw the pickup coming behind him at a high rate of speed.
The dump truck driver made an emergency right turn onto CR 25 in an attempt to clear the roadway for the pickup. He advised that the pickup driver was fishtailing in an attempt to slow his vehicle but swerved into the westbound lane where he collided head-on with a semi truck.
The semi truck went off the north side of US 6 where he collided with a telephone pole, which was snapped into two pieces.
The condition of the pickup driver is unknown at this time. The semi driver was being treated by Jackson Township EMS for a hand injury. The dump truck driver, who was not involved in the collision, was unhurt.
US 6 is expected to be closed for at least another hour.
