Triton Basketball: Trojan Girls, Boys Split At Culver
CULVER — Triton split a boys/ girls doubleheader on the road at Culver Community Friday night, the Lady Trojans routing their hosts 54-10 in the opener, and the boys falling 42-33 to their Culver counterparts in Hoosier North Athletic Conference action.
LADY TROJANS 54, LADY CAVALIERS 10
Triton’s girls got off to a fast start with an 18-2 first quarter, then held their hosts scoreless over the second period on the way to their second straight HNAC win this week. The Lady Trojans (9-10, 4-1 HNAC) remain a half game behind Knox, which sits atop the conference standings at 4-0.
The Cavs surrendered nearly two turnovers to every shot they took, coughing the ball up 34 times while converting on just 3 of 18 total shots from the field for the night. Triton finished at an efficient 20-of-47 (42.6 percent) rate, meanwhile, with Hannah Wanemacher knocking down 6 of 10 shots on her way to 20 points. Delanie Groves never missed a shot from the field on her way to 10 points for the night, Charlotte Morris scored nine points with seven rebounds, and Jaela Faulkner passed out five assists in the win, Triton’s most lopsided of the season.
Lily Hayes scored five points to lead Culver (2-14, 0-5 HNAC).
CAVALIERS 42, TROJANS 33
The Trojans saw their HNAC chances take a serious hit with the loss in Friday’s nightcap with their second loss in conference play. Triton (4-5, 2-3 HNAC) fell behind 24-14 in the first half and never quite recovered against the Cavaliers (2-10, 2-3 HNAC), who won their second straight after going winless through their first 10 games.
The visitors scuffled to a 10-of-31 (32.3 percent) finishing rate from the floor, while the Cavs went 13 of 29 (44.8) percent from the field for the night in a game that featured 39 fouls and a combined 30 trips to the line by the competitors.
Ross Johnson scored 17 points, and Beau Hepler put up seven, but the Trojans struggled to find deep offensive production in the loss, just the Trojans’ second in their past six games. Culver got 12 points from Kia Riale and nine from Ethan Shuman and shared the ball for 10 assists — led by R.T. Roberts’ five — compared to just two by Triton.
Triton’s boys and girls play another doubleheader at Bremen as the Bi-County Tournament kicks off next Tuesday. Girls are slated for a 6 p.m tip-off with the boys to follow.
