George William ‘Bill’ VanHorn
George William “Bill” VanHorn, 91, most recently of Churubusco, passed away at 8:05 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, 2018 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
He was born on Jan. 9, 1927 in Belmont County, Ohio. He was the only son of Albert and Lela (Neuhart) Vanhorn. He spent his formative years on the family farm helping his dad farm.
VanHorn served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was married on Aug. 26, 1948 to Alice Spearman in her parents’ home.
VanHorn worked in his early years as a Livestock Driver and also was a drainage contractor. Later he worked as an Insurance Salesman before retiring from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
In his free time, he loved being outside with his draft Horses. He was a member of the Pulaskiville Community Bible Church and the Central Ohio Wagon Train Club. VanHorn had a servant’s heart and he enjoyed taking his draft horses and wagon around to area parades and fairs to give people rides in his covered wagon. He also served as the community Santa Claus for 50 years.
VanHorn is survived by his son, Rick (Kathryn) VanHorn of Churubusco; a son-in-law, Jamie (Debbie) Taylor; six grandchildren, David (Kim) VanHorn, Nathan (Amanda) VanHorn, Kaly VanHorn, Anna VanHorn, Jamie (Misty) Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor; eight great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Alice Vanhorn; a daughter, LeeAnn Taylor; an infant son, David William VanHorn; two sisters, Bessie Shinaberry and Mary Underwood.
Calling will take place at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15. Calling will also be at the Snyder Funeral Home Craven Chapel 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead, Ohio, from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17,, at Snyder Funeral Home Craven Chapel. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Chesterville, Ohio.
