Sister Who Stole Money From Sibling Sentenced
WARSAW — A Warsaw woman arrested in June 2017 for stealing from her brother’s residence was sentenced today, Jan. 11, on a charge of burglary.
Casey D. Pratt, 3430 N. 400E, Warsaw, was sentenced on a charge of burglary, a level 4 felony. Per the plea agreement, a charge of theft was dismissed.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, on June 11, 2017, Pratt’s brother notified police that sometime between June 6 and June 11 someone had entered his residence and taken money he had been saving. Nothing else was removed. He told police he suspected his sister.
The victim advised that he confronted Pratt and she admitted to him she had gone into his residence and removed the money. When interviewed by police, Pratt stated she waited until she knew he was gone and went into his home and removed the money without his permission.
Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Brad Voelz told the court that Pratt had stated, “I needed some extra money and I knew where to get it.” Voelz stated that Pratt clearly showed no remorse for her actions with that statement.
Pratt tearfully apologized to the court and her family, stating that the dynamic within her family has changed and she is regretful of that. A no contact order prohibits the siblings from being around each other.
“I hope and pray my brother forgives me,” Pratt stated.
With four theft related felonies, Judge David Cates showed little sympathy for Pratt.
Pratt was sentenced to six years at the Indiana Department of Corrections, with two of those years suspended to be served on probation. Should she qualify, Pratt may spend the sentence on work release.
Cates also ordered restitution in the amount of $3,500 be paid to the victim. The no contact order remains in place.
