Grace Basketball: Women See Win Streak Stopped
EVANSVILLE – The Grace College women’s basketball team ended 2017 with a road contest at NCAA Div. II Southern Indiana Sunday.
The Eagles (10-1), ranked No. 20 in the D2 Coaches’ Poll, took down Grace 83-46.
The Lady Lancers (8-8) had a five-game winning streak snapped by the Eagles after struggling mightily in the first half.
USI blitzed Grace from the onset, scoring the first 18 points of the game. The Lady Lancers missed their first 10 shots and had seven turnovers in the opening seven minutes before Lauren Godfrey broke the drought with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter.
The second quarter was not much better for Grace. After scoring seven points in the opening period, the Lady Lancers only tacked on six more in the second stanza.
USI led 44-13 at halftime after shooting 50 percent from the floor compared to 19 percent for Grace.
The Lady Lancers outscored the Eagles in the third quarter 22-18. Vironnica Drake, Brooke Sugg and Lexi Minix all scored five points with a 3-pointer apiece, and Kelsie Peterson also sank a triple in the quarter.
But Grace was unable to cut USI’s cushion down in the fourth quarter at the Physical Activities Center.
Kyannah Stull scored a team-high 11 points, shooting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and Sugg and Minix each tallied eight points.
Pam Miller grabbed seven rebounds with three points, Micaela Box added two points and three assists, Kaylie Warble tacked on two points and six boards, and Godfrey scored four.
The Lady Lancers return to league play on Wednesday. Grace hosts St. Francis for a women’s/men’s doubleheader at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center starting at 6 p.m.
