Warsaw Wrestlers In Loaded Al Smith Invite
MISHAWAKA – The Warsaw wrestling team will get the opportunity to measure itself against some of the best competition in the state the next two days.
The Tigers are one of 32 teams in the Al Smith Invitational set for Friday and Saturday at Mishawaka High School.
The prestigious event, regarded as one of the best and toughest tournaments in the state, features seven squads ranked among the Top 20. Headlining the 40th annual event is No. 2 Indianapolis Cathedral, along with No. 8 Columbus Esat, No. 9 Chesterton and No. 10 Penn.
Wrestling is slated to begin Friday at 10 a.m. in two gyms at MHS and continue throughout the day. Quarterfinals are then slated to start Saturday at 9 a.m. with finals scheduled to begin around 1:30 p.m.
The Tigers will be joined by NorthWood, Goshen and Elkhart Memorial from the Northern Lakes Conference. The field will also include Elkhart Central, Jimtown and Rochester.
Warsaw, boasting a young team this season for coach Kris Hueber, is currently 5-16 overall and 0-4 in NLC action. The Tigers have been idle since going 1-3 in the Northridge Raider Super Duals on Dec. 9. Senior heavyweight Dillon Estepp has been a key performer for Warsaw thus far this season.
Admission is $10 each day or $5 for children age 12 and younger.
