Wawasee Basketball: Warriors Upend No. 9 Central Noble
SYRACUSE – The Wawasee girls basketball team picked up its biggest win of the season Friday night.
A healthy dose of defense and the late heroics of Aubrey Kuhn and Casey Schroeder carried the host Warriors to a 44-39 win over Class 2-A N. 9 Central Noble.
Kuhn and Schroeder combined to go a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line in the game’s final three minutes as Wawasee outscored the Cougars 15-9 in the final quarter for the huge non-conference win.
Wawasee, which improves to 7-6, hit 15-18 from the line in the win. Central Noble, which falls to 9-3, was just 5-10 from the stripe on the night.
Wawasee led 10-6 after the first period and 21-16 at halftime before falling behind 30-29 at the end of the third period.
Kabrea Rostochak hit a key trey in the final frame and Hannah Marie-Lamle had a pair of big buckets to help lead the rally for the Warriors.
The Wawasee defense shut down the high scoring duo of Sydney Frreman and Melah Leatherman in the game. The pair, who were averaging a combined 36 points-per-game, were held to just a total of 16 points. Leatherman led her team with nine points.
Kuhn paced the winners with a game-high 14 points. Schroeder finished with 10 and Rostochak and Marie-Lamle each had seven points.
Central Noble won the junior varsity game 34-30. Danielle Jenkins had 11 points and Madison Mottern eight to lead Wawasee.
